We swim a group of our dogs weekly, weather permitting, at a large local pond, after clearing it each time for gators.
The club member that does this more frequently has a dog of steel - an incredibly fit Mal he has there!
Great exercise for the dogs, we have them retrieve float decoy's...it's a ball.
When I started swimming my dogs, I found that my female loved to jump off the side of the pool. This gave me the idea to try a Dock Dogs competition (seen on TV in the ESPN's GOG). So the next local one we signed up for. Her and her cousin were the only shepherds there, amongst a sloo of labs, chesie's and other water/hunting breeds. She ended up getting a 1,2 &3rd in novice (under 10 ft. division) some of the labs were jumping 20ft+, but it was alot of fun just to break the mold, and demonstrate the versatility of the German Shepherd.
I judged this years terrier races at Purina's Incredible Dog Challenge. I watched a Border Collie break the world record Dock Dog competition with a jump of 26ft+ . Jan 2nd it will be telivised.
Jan 2/05 on NBC at 1 or 2pm. Not sure if thats EST, CST or what.
I quit swimming my dogs in the local lakes when my JRT, Pete, came out of the water with a bassplug in his shoulder. Before I could get to him, he grabbed it and yanked it out himself. You guessed it! I then had to push it thru the rest of his lip and snip it off in order to get it out. Being a JRT  , he tried to go back in the water as soon as I let him go. I grabbed him and, with my Border terriers, I headed for home.
I swim my dogs as much as possible - at least once a week in the sea - their idea of heaven, they love to crash through the waves - which is a real stamina builder, especially when swimming against the currents.
When I got my work dog I was told that he liked the water....which I took for his knowing how to swim (my mistake). So one hot day this past summer after training I took him to a big lake in one of our county parks. I get him into drive and throw his tennis ball into the lake....he takes off and dives into the water. At first I was puzzled as to why he wasn't making any progress towards the ball...then I realised that he was sinking lower and lower into the water. He never gave up going after that ball bless his furry little heart. The people around the dock got quite the show as I did my Eric Estrada CHIPS lake rescue in full uniform.
