So far I haven't had a problem with fleas but for those that might, I heard this today on television...
They suggested putting an unused flea collar (opened, of course) into the bag or canaster of your vacum (sp?) cleaner - this way if you suck up a flea out of the carpet - it dies when it gets into the bag or canister...otherwise, according to them, whenever you cut the vacum off - the fleas just crawl right back out into your house...
We had a problem for a few years with mice coming in the house and bringing fleas (and of course tapes and mites) with them.
We used Sevin dust around and behind the baseboards and under the cushions on the couch, chairs, etc., in the vaccuum (bagless), and the trash can bags. I don't have little kids, so am not too worried it will end up in anybody's mouth.
We used Revolution on the dogs and cats. The american (g)sd has flea allergy problems, and the cats seem to be endless reservoirs for fleas and ear mites  All of them (including my pet rat) thought the mice were salty, crunchy snacks, so that's not surprising.
This combination seemed to work really well for those infestations. Now that we live w/o mice getting in, I'm back to ivermectin and pyretherins (which gets sprayed in the vaccuum).
I used to get some wickedly expensive flea control for the yard too. It had diatoms and nematodes in it, I think (?) and seemed to help. I couldn't put chemicals on the lawn, because I have a footstool-sized sulcatta tortoise that grazes there.
