I have always fed my rotties Pro-Plan, never had a problem and my dogs have all lived nice long lives (my 14 yr old is still on Pro Plan). I switched to Wellness with my new rottie, felt it would be better nutritionally for him (lack of knowledge maybe?). The dog has never had real good tight stools. Now as he is growing (18/mo 110lbs.) the stools are really getting loose. He is in great condition, not a voracious eater but has his 5/6 cups a day. I have to get him away from the Wellness, doesn't work for him. Did I unfairly leave Pro Plan. Are there better foods readily available that have what he needs.
Thanks and Happy Holiday to All.......
Jerry

Discussing food is like discussing politics. It can really stir things up. You have to feed what works for you, fits your budget and is available in your area. Me, I feed Nutro Natural Choice and I switch between the lamb and rice and chicken, oatmeal and rice. I can usually get a 44 pound bonus bag for around $26.99 and after I buy 10 I get one free.
The only thing needed for evil to exist is for good men to stand by and do nothing!!!
Thanks Roger,
Do you know any of the nutrient values in the Nutro. I'm totally ignorant to that stuff, maybe you can educate me a little. I can read the bag but, I don't know if what I'm reading is beneficial for my dog. Nutro is one of the foods I was thinking about because it is readily available in my location. How do your dogs do on it when it comes time to eliminate? I am beginning to have to follow my dog with a wet/dry shop-vac on the Wellness.

I'm with Roger for loving the Nutro brands. They frequently sell the large 40 pound bags with and extra 10% more food for the regular price, which certainly helps me.
And Candice is right about using the amount the bag recommends as a GUIDE only and usually everyone I knows feeds less. I know my ADULT GSD eats only around 2 cups a day (65 pounds), while my 'puppy' eats 4 cups of the same food (she's 10 months old now). I look at the dogs, I want them lean, want to see/feel their ribs and want the tucked up belly (from the side view) and the 'waist' obvious from a top view (where the ribs end to the belly). The amount of food I give my dogs can vary some due to the time of year and also the amount of exercise they get. Along with I'd rather have them a bit lean than a bit FAT!

another good food to try is cannidae. It is very good for the dogs with allergies. I am curious as to how loose? I know thats gross but I used to raise rotts and sometimes it's not the food, I don't have a good term, but I call it internalizing stress. I had a few that had semi-solid stools when I didn't have time to run and work them well. as far as the major brands of dog foods if you put them on a graph their isn't one that stands out way above the rest. However every dog is different and some foods don't work as well as others. That being said changing dog food alot can cause it's own set of problems. I wish you luck, I definatly have been down this road before. Nowdays as long as the dogpoop is sorta firm, and no other signs of illness, I don't do anything, chasing after the perfect dog food killed me.
Thanks for all the help <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I think I will mix some of the Wellness with a new batch of Nutro to wean him off and see what happens. I have to assume that it is a food issue because he shows no signs of any other problem. I have spoken to some owners who have experienced the same with Wellness. May also get rid of some of his GASSSS.
