Unrelated...........putting my hat into the K-9 handler ring this week. Position may come open; any oral board questions I should anticipate? Wish me luck, Gordo

Gordo,
So-You want to be a Handler eh???
Yes, weigh it carefully. It isn't a job, but a way of life. After your shift is over and the other's go for a drink you have to go home, groom him, feed him, and let him be one of the family. On annual leave you still have that responsibility. On Christmas Eve, he's still yours, when guest come to visit,he's yours, when your backyard gets covered in "dead spots", he's still yours. His water bucket will freeze and you'll have to pay to replace it. His harness will fray an dyou'll have to repair it. His problems are your problems. Not in theory, but in a very real, identifiable way. You'll know before you finish your basic training taht the honymoon isn't JUST over---there never was one.
Your dog will get sick, have off-days,throw up in the patrol car, snarl at an Inspector (who up to that time was pro-canine), bark in your ear, fight with another dog---and lose, and chew one of your best pair of gloves because he was bored. In spite of all theseproblems, you are expected to love, cherish, and motivate him to do abetter job then he did last week!
But when you track down the armed robber, locate that burglar,re-capture taht escaped prisner, find that lost three year old, you may find that it was all worth while. When he puts his head in your lap for a quick scratch, you'll feel a close kinship, and if he gives his life to save yours, you'll shed tears as if for a human partner. On retirement, when they give you that plaque and bag of kibble, you'll say,
"I wouldn't have changed a thing."

Gordo,
Typical oral board questions: Have you discussed being a K9 Trooper with your family. Do you have a suitable place to keep an assigned dog. Does your housing area have any restrictions on kennels on the property. Do you have pets of your own. Of course they usually ask " why do you want to be a canine handler". Please don't use "cause I like dogs" as your first answer. Good Luck. If it is something you really want to do, you'll never regret it. If you are using it as a stepping stone for some other position, you will hate it. The compensation you get as a handler will never truly compensate you for the time you expend. But then, I wouldn't want to do anything else. I hope it works out for you, if this is really what you want to do.

Old Canine Unit motto:
We'll run any track; search any building; swim any river; go out at any hour...in any weather; brave any hardship; give our sweat, tears and blood to get the bad guy. But YOU do the paperwork!!!
If you REALLY want to be "Canine", you can count on lots of hard work, very little thanks, lack of understanding from superiors, being on call (this is LOTS of fun!), less time with your family, less time with your personal dog(s), more paperwork, probably more court time, keeping up all your other LE-required training in addition to Canine training, dealing with people who are dog "experts" because they have owned two dogs; and to being stereotyped as a "Dawg Man"...even if you are a woman.
The road to Captain or Major very seldom runs anywhere near the Canine range. It is the absolute BEST job in Law Enforcement...but only if it is where you really want to be.
My guess on questions for a State program would include being up on Drug Interdiction stuff, search & seizure laws and any of the more recent decisions in related areas such as PC via alerts, tracks, etc.
Good Luck!

Thanks Doug,
Which rules? Competition rules for WPO? DPO from which area as each jurisdiction changes them to suit their needs. Or the old historic ones that would have been available at one time as the genertal rules?
If you narrow it down I can get them for you.

Kevin
I am getting a copy of the DPO competition rules from Mike Andrel.
You are a WPO Judge, correct? Could I get a copy of those competition rules?
Thanks
