Hi everyone. I'm new here. I have a few questions about parvo. I had a dog from the time he was born and he was vaccinated once. I never really knew that parvo was such a threat. He got sick and died from the parvo at the vets. The vet insisted that if i bleached my home really well that I could take home a new dog in as little as 35 days as long as i picked one over 6 months old and it has had all of it's vaccinations. Is this true? I took a beagle home a few days ago it's been about 40 days since i lost my last dog...my beagle is 7 months old and she spayed and vaccinated the dog the same day i took her home. She told me the dog was up to date on all of her shots and that there was a VERY slim chance that parvo could be passed on to her because of her age....again is this true?
Yes your chances are slim. Parvo is a virus usually associated in puppies so having an older dog is a good idea. As a vet tech for 7 years I've been told by some vets that parvo can last for a year or longer and the only sure-fire way to kill it is bleach and sunlight. I have also seen parvo in vaccinated older and adult dogs. As long as you catch parvo early your dog should be okay. It can be expensive to treat as well. The 1st time you see something abnormal consult your vet.
Deanna,
The reason why I had asked after I had already brought the dog here is because I was confident in what my vet told me. A friend actually sent me over this site and told me that she thought the vet was wrong. My dogs health is very important to me and if need be I would have had her tested for parvo sooner than what I had planned. Thanks for the input I really appreciate it.
Bleach diluted one part bleach to 10 parts water in a spray bottle over the entire non-carpeted flooring areas, as well as outside in dirt or concreted areas. Sunlight will take care of the grass. You can also install UV lights indoors, and this will help kill anything that MIGHT be left. My guess is that the dog will be okay, but you might try looking in to some immune system boosting supplements. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
