My dog has smelly ears, the were full of a brown wax and I have been cleaning them daily for a week and giving him ear mite medicine. The brown wax is gone but his ears still have an odor and they look red and irritated on the inside. Do you guys think I need to keep treating for mites or does he have an infection. A friend of mine told me to use a product called happy jacks ear canker powder and his would clear up. Do you guys think I should keep treating for mites a few more days or try the ear canker powder that my friend told me to use? BTW he is a pharmisit and also treat and vacinates animals.
I know it costs but take your dog to the vet and he will be diagnosed with either yeast or bacterial infection.
either way it should clear up quickly with the right treatment and your dog will thank you for it!
with the flea tretments out there i have not seen ear mites in a long time on my dogs, but we have had the occassional yeast infection in my older guy with the allergies.
Yeast infections can be caused by a diet problem also. I've been told by a Holistic Vet that in a case such as this you would need to change the diet or your dog will be subject to more yeast infections. Just my two cents.
In the FWIW category. When my dog was on Eukanuba, his ears were constantly full of brown gunk. Poor pupper was always pawing at them. I'd clean and medicate to no avail.
Switched to Innova and some raw additions. I haven't even had to clean his ears for several years now.
The upgrade in diet is the only thing I can attribute this too.
That sounds more like yeast than mites IMO. Mite meds can cause the irritation. So can cleanings because it strips a lot of the natural protection from the ears. If you have a floppy earred breed you might find it useful to pin the ears back with a headband and let them air out. We have all sorts of problems with our labs ears so we`ve tried just about everything. Airing them out and only using meds when necessary has helped a lot.
