Recently I visited 2 Shutzhund clubs. When I asked about bringing the puppy to the training field I was told not for many months due to parvoe. Is this acurate and if it is, at what age is genereally good to bring the pup out to meet the club.
I always take my puppies to the club from the first day I have them and this is usually with 8 weeks. Sure I'm carefull with other dogs but the puppy gets exposed to all the things which will be important to it's future life. I show the puppy as much as I can and I get it exposed to as many things as possible the first year. I track, I do obiedience and I play tug of war or the helper plays tug of war to the puppy's level and I look that it's always fun for the puppy.
Has there been a recent outbreak of parvo in the area? Has the puppy been properly vaccinated? Many months?? due to parvo?? I would ask more questions of the club(s).
I too bring my puppies out to training at 8 weeks for socialization and worldly experiences. The sooner the better to club training.
Thanks for the Responces, they have not had any outbreaks of parvo or rabies or distemper as of yet, however they say that since the filed unattended during the week that any critter mught come out and poop on the filed. My inderstand of parvo is that there must PILES of poop left on the field for transmitting parvo. The field is cleaned regularly and no other dogs are sick. I guess I should wait until the vet checks the dog out and see what she says.
If your dog and the others have been vaccinated, there should be no reason to keep him at home. He needs the socialization at his age. Vaccines take about 1-2 weeks for the body to form immunity, so two weeks after his first vaccine he is fine. Make sure your dog continues the complete cycle of pup vaccines. They do these vaccines so frequently because maternal antibodies left in their body can attack and destroy the vaccine. By the ago of 12 wk. they are gone so that last vaccine ensures immunity.
Plus, parvo is so highly contagious that any dog under 1 1/2 years with exposure and no vaccine against it would get it. You say that there hasn't been any dogs that have had it around there, so the risk is probably lower. Dogs over 1 1/2 years with healthy immune systems do not get the virus.
Hope this helps!
