I am curious to learn more about the A.I. procedure. I believe that this procedure will be very beneficial to breeding in the future. I also believe that it needs to be more researched, because I hear of people missing all the time doing it. I am considering using frozen semen in the future. I do not like the thought of sending my female on an airplane to a strange place with strange people. Does this really need to be done by a professional or are there kits you can get to do it yourself? What kits are the best? How can I ensure that I will not miss the breeding if and when I do it?
Progesterone testing through a good lab will help to detect ovulation. Don't assume (like I did) that progesterone tests are all the same. The first test I did was a total waste of $92 in Maine, and if I hadn't listened to Cindy I probably would have missed this breeding.
So far as frozen semen and procedures, look at the International Canine Semen Bank webpage and also some of the info at caninebiotech. Both talk about sucess rates.
Frozen semen when done by a vet that knows what they are doing has a high sucess rate. If you go to a vet that does not specialize in reproduction, don't be surprized if you miss.
Both are pretty successful if done by a vet who knows what they are doing. Frozen timing has got to be right on becuase the semen lives about 12 hours. Fresh there is a little more room to play with, but with either option you MUST do progesterone tests. It is quite expensive to do frozen as it has to be surgically implanted, but saves shiping charges, and allows you to breed to a dog who you might not be able to otherwise.(for example: if the dog is deceased)
