I am 27, been in dogs since I was 15, spent years in high school as a bather, then became a groomer, found Schutzhund by accident in 98...took a hiatus from dogs till around 2001 for medical reasons aside from having a pet and various rescues in and out of my house. Had my first litter of GSD's in 2003, and my third is 4 weeks old in the box behind me.
It did start earlier than that, but those would be the more formal association times. All my life I have had a special connection with dogs. I could walk through a field and end up with a pack of dogs following me. (In rural NC loose dogs are not uncommon). My mom would call them my "ducklings".. It's just always been that way.
My mom calls me "Ellie May" lol... though, I don't wear gingham and I certainly don't have a rope belt or brother named Jethro...

Deanna, If you're still in NC what city do you reside in? My story is I've had a dog all my life(Golden Retreiver and Old English Sheepdog)so couldn't see myself without one now. I started at 13 as a vet assistant, a year later worked my way up to vet tech, did that thru high school, majored in hs in animal science and medical careers, did my senior project on police and personal protection dogs (98/100 yay!!), got first gsd as graduation gift (picked him over car), spent 4 years as an Explorer with the Sheriff's Dept. here (working a lot with the K-9 division), got involved with local trainer and breeder and became interested in schutzhund bought 2 more gsd's from working lines and now I'm here.

I am not still in NC, I left out all the moves to save space, LOL, but I will probably be moving back to the Asheville area in May.
Long story short lived in NC from 12 to 21.

I'm 59. I trained my first dog when I was 12(1957) with two books. One by Wm Koehler , and the other by Blanche Saunders, one of the founders of AKC obedience. In spite of me, the dog was fantastic. GSD cross, of course . I attended my first obedience class in 1964. I taught and competed heavily throughout the 80s. Late 80s till this year (gittin to damn old to do all that digging), I trained and hunted with working terriers. I've been training with SAR dogs for 3-4 yrs. Schutzhund observer for 3-4yrs. Training in Schutzhund for one year. I now have the best dog I've EVER owned (Czech GSD) and the sky's the limit.

I'll be 37 this year - got my first dog at 4, began working with a trainer at 8. Helped my dad train a field dog, trained 3 Rotties - began Schutzhund, but left because the group leader had a uterine issue (as in I had one, so I was automatically missing half my brain and couldn't do the work - idiot). Worked for years with a local obedience business as a trainer.
Oh - and I taught middle school for 8 years - doesn't that count??

Hmm , should I dare give my age. I am old enough to know better. My traning experience is limited. I hope to ob train a dog soon. I have been fostering airedales with midwest airedale rescue for about 11 years.Apopted my first Airedale from working lines. Was introduced to Tom Rose by the breeder.Owned a gsd back in the 1960,s but he was a lot different then the dogs I see now. Have learned a lot about animal behaviour via the Humane Society were I am employed and this website. I turned 50 in jan.

And techinically, I think middle school falls under the category of training wild and protected species...
