Took the new puppy Buster to the park the other day. he had his little prong collar on and he looked so cute! Anyway he barks at other dogs who are barking, I have been working on this with him as I hate to hear a yapping dog. He knows what OUT! means and he really does so well with obedience. We were walking past this yapping dog and he not only started yapping back, but tried running towards this dog and barking and pulling on the leash. Well I gave him his correction he gave out a "YIKE!", looked up at me, wagged his tail. I bent down and patted his side and said "GOOD Boooooy!" and kept moving, well the other lady just stood there with this look on her face like I'd just killed him and was dragging his dead carcass along, of course all the while her dog was yapping up a storm. I just smiled and walked off.
Same thing happened with Xena when she was 5 1/2 months old, she was pulling and growling and acting like an ass to this lady's pug, so I corrected her, same response except I got called a Bitch, to which I responded,"Why yes she is a female! Good eye!"
Is it your experience that people appreciate a well behaved dog or what? Seems like**seems** mind you , like people here could care less what their dogs do, and their children for that matter. Whenevr people meet my two GSDs, they are simply in AWE that they are so well behaved. Why is it that it is accepted that dogs are allowed to be complete asses and when people really do try to work them and train, they get frowned upon?
Are any of you familiar with dirty looks and comments?

I haven't had problems based on corrections, but....
When I was training the Giant to pull the wagon, people would stop as they were driving by and get out to yell at me for training him to "fight". They would usually calm down when I explained what we were doing. The problem stopped when we moved from the tire to the actual wagon.
I have learned over the years that it isn't worth it to even discuss training with those folks. They don't get it at all, and never will. I just ignore them and walk off. If they get aggressive a watch command is usually the end of the conversation.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird. |

You think that’s bad…..the looks you get when people see an e-collar on your dog are three times worse. I love when they say, “Is he really that bad that he needs a shock collar?”

These days most people have been brainwashed by the positive training and clicker crowd to such an extent that not only has the the value of a good correction been lost, but correcting your dog is now perceived as an abhorrent action performed by only the most abusive dog owners.

Nevermind the fact that well timed and executed corrections are generally a necessary part of training.
I find that raising my middle finger, and only my middle finger, while gesturing vehemently in the offended's direction (with a nice smile on my face) usually conveys the exact message I'm trying to get across.

Im sick of dirty looks & comments, when i apply a correction! people think is to harsh. My dog needs harsh corrections. ie: dog came from nowhere towards my leashed dog. my dog rolled him as soon as the loose dog growled at him ( ihad no time to react) but he/my dog was not hurting the dog. just rolled him upside down & was holding him by the scruff while standing above him. the owner of the dog running full speead yelling no no no... so i grabed my dog by the scruff (he yiped) i i pulled him away. i should not have done this, he was just responding to the other dogs agressin protectig himeslf & me, mabey. but i did it so i dont hear it from the panicked woman. when she got her dog she said "thats why dogs get aggressive & turn on ther owners. I felt like hurting her! anyway that was the latest episode of this. i try to completly ignore people like this. but i get it a lot. when my dog is good i can just wisper a command & he jumps to do it. but when he is being an intentional butthead (1.5yr) i have to put a little hurt on him. im tired of all the people who know beter then me how to deal with MY dog.
guess you can say i feal your pain.
Gerlert's master, returned to find his son gone & his crib bathed in blood. Seeing Gerlert's bloody mouth he stabbed and killed the dog. The noise woke the baby, hidden in the blankets. Under the bed,was a dead wolf. It's throat had been torn out. |

Fortunately the look on my face in return is worse than theirs. I really think the owner of the "ooh we forgot our leash today" yapper that ran up on us left the park because of it.

When's the last time you've heard someone tell you that your prong collar looks like a medievil torture device. Or your e-collar is like "those taser things the police use on bad guys"...The world would be a better place if humans had to wear e-collars! ::evil genuis laugh:: uh, I mean tasers.

I offer them the leash and say "Show me!" One of these days, somebody is going to be stupid enough to take it! Hope I have Anja (aka "The Punk") on the other end!
