Here is another dog with problems.I have my own ideas of how to fix them but enjoy hearing other ideas from knowlegeable people. This dog has a very chewy bite, targets the hand, has out problems, prey driven and doesnt perceive the decoy as a possible threat.Im planning on giving the dog some misses and having the dog pull the handler to the bite so the dog has more time to focus on where to bite and once the dog has the bite on the forearm have the handler become a post and work on holding the grip and then slip the sleeve and let it carry.Does that sound like the best place to start or is there something better I should do or someplace better to start?
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Chewy bite, nerve problem...targets the hand, avoids direct contact with the helper....out problem, nerve problem....this dog perceives a threat more than you think. This dog is in conflict.......
Without seeing the problem first hand the dog sounds really weak and nervy. If this is the case, you are better off taking him off the road than trying to fix something that just may not be fixable. If it was just crap training to start with, and the dog has poor habits from bad training or decoys, it should begin to fix itself with some solid foundation work put back on the dog.
If it is a actual genetic weakness, fixing it will only mask the real behavior under the surface. Should the dog be put in a high stress or physical confrontation for real, he'll be gone and more of a liability to the handler and dept that anything else.
The characteristics you discribe are worrysome at the least, down right dangerous probably.
It can come from poor animal, poor training, poor handling, but usually a combination of these things. Take the dog to a third party known to be fair, knowledgeable, and respected in the law enforcement community. Do it with department sanction and have the results brought to the attention of the supervisory staff. Come up with a real solution that could range from formal training with a knowledgeable police service dog instructor to retirement.
A few misses, and dragging the handler around isn't the solution though it may treat some symtoms it isn't addressing the problem.
Kevin is right. Find a good knoledgable trainer in protection. If this is only a training or handler probem,(IF) The cure is not as easy as you think. There is more than one problem here and it has to be broken down into its parts and fixed seperatly, then put back together.
