Sad, but the set-up was typical. A chained dog, a trailer park, an unsupervised small child with a careless parent.
Result: dead or maimed child.
Very sad, and very preventable.
If you have a chained dog in your backyard and a small child, one of them should be taken away from you, and I don't care which.

Actually, both should be taken away, permanently.

yep, a damn $200 10X20 kennel would have more than likely saved that boys life, and probably the dogs, because you can't say right now what provoked the dog. We all know how innocently children can play with our dogs, pulling their ears, throwing rocks, hitting them with sticks. Especially a 4yr old. That dog is a pet but still an animal and should be supervised with children at ALL TIMES including the little 45seconds. I feel very sorry for the mother and what she now has to live with, but I feel even more sorry for the little boy.

Do any of you let your dogs and children play together. I have no children yet so it is not an issue but I am curious if any of you have working dogs that live in the house and spend time with your kids. I grew up with dogs and was left unsupervised with them quite abit although these were Labs not Shepherds, Pits, etc. Is the general consensus that this is a very bad idea. These stories would certainly seem to suggest that.

I grew up around dogs as well. When I was younger I got bit (scratched?) a lot. Sure, I learned a lot about dog behaviour, but if those dogs were any bigger I'd probably be dead by now...(they were primitive-type dogs). My conclusion: no matter how much kids like dogs and knows dogs, they're gonna do stupid things, and it's not worth leaving both alone unsupervised...

yes, my kids have always interacted with all of my dogs. At one point in time when I was big into competition(other venue) and breeding, I had 26 dogs, and from the time my daughter could walk she would tag along for feeding, shots, poop pick up, then my son came along and same thing. However, under no circumstances are my kids ever left alone and out of reasonable reach with the dogs. I think it's good to let your kids interact with the dogs, I feel if the dog fully knows your kids you lessen the chances of your dog(s) wigging out on your kids one day, because they will be a little more tolerable of your kids due to their interaction. That is my opinion.

I also have always been left alone with our dog as a child again this was a Golden mix pound puppy and she never showed any aggression but again things seem alot different these days. I have two children and in fact run an in home child care and none of the kids are left alone with Kane (15 month GSD) They go out in the yard and play and he runs loose with me out there. If I have to run in to the bathroom or whatever hes locked up. Not that I think he will hurt them ( not that I think he "cant" hurt them)but better to be safe than sorry... not to mention all the mean things kids can do to dogs and not even think its bad. Like the other day my 2 year old son had a huge stick that fell from the tree and was getting readdy to "batter up" (not towards the dog but never the less) I of course took the stick and told him no but if I left them unattended with the dog out there. It could have gotten very ugly. You just have to use your head. Sad story

Chris Duhon:
"At one point in time when I was big into competition(other venue)"
What many of you may not know is that Chris has been an internationally famous "Canine Free Style Dancer" just a short time ago. Chris and his canine partner, the famous toy poodle "Poofie" won the hearts and minds of millions. To watch Chris dance in his lace and rhinestone pink Matador costume with Poofie was a sight that I've never been able to forget.
I'm sure he'll kill me now that I've revealed his secret.....
