Short answer? Yes. Long answer? Yes with a 'but.'
There are some lines out there that are not bred for work- not as many as working lines, but some. If I was looking for a dog for sport I certainly wouldn't start my search with these. However (and someone with more knowledge on this please correct me if I'm wrong the differences between 'show' and 'work' Mals is not as extreme as in the GSD. A Malinois that comes from a non-working pedigree may still be a decent working dog but I would not be surprised if it doesn't end up being your picture perfect Ring III/SchH III powerhouse.
Like border collies in the States (forgive me for going with the other breed I know!) The AKC registered "barbie" collie may still be able to herd sheep but I'd put a whole lot more money on the farm-bred ABCA/ISDS dog with the pedigree back to Scotland to win the stockdog trial.
Hope that helps you.

Hi Corey...
>>However (and someone with more knowledge on this please correct me if I'm wrong ) the differences between 'show' and 'work' Mals is not as extreme as in the GSD.<<
I have found this to be the same as in the GSD's. There are MANYYYYYYYY Mals that just don't work period...absolutely no drive...not to play, hunt/retrieve, bite whatever...And it's not only the lack of drive but also not possessing the correct temperament or character for work...
If one wants a Mal for WORK...Then my advice is stay with 100% working lines...even then it's NOT a GUARANTEE but the probability of success is much greater.
Anyways, JMO.

Makes sense, Brigita. Your opinion is going to be a wee bit more educated than mine- I've only been around this breed for a short time!
Re: my response- I was trying to be diplomatic (ha ha.) I've known a couple of showline Mals who could not work to save their lives, but boy, were they pretty
Not something I'm going to have to worry about- I get to bring my working boy home next month. ...oops. That didn't come out quite right, did it? Nero's certainly not an ugly guy, but there you have it- I'd rather have an unpretty dog that I can work with over a gorgeous moron any day.

Corey, you find show Mals attractive? I literally laughed my butt off when I first saw one--which is also a reason why I never considered a Malinois before, while trying to choose my breed. All my books were AKC-type so the Mals featured were show Mals. Then I saw my first working Mal on the net and my jaw literally dropped. It's the dark colour, the 'regular wild dog' look that I like so much. Show mals just look like they have manes and walk on stilts and have their coats painted on...

Corey, you find show Mals attractive?
umm....how can I answer that and not get crucified?
In my defense, the first Malinois I ever knew was (is) a very pretty, comparatively delicate (showy) girl with long legs, short coat, and tons of pigment. So I went for a while thinking that that was what a "good" Malinois was supposed to look like. (Same as someone saying that all border collies should be black and white, fluffy, and 19-22" tall!)
Imagine my surprise after I started training. There were no two Mals that looked alike. It was difficult to believe (for a newbie) that they were all purebred- and all the same breed to boot!
There are some beautiful Mals out there, I have to admit, but after a few years of Ring and hours of Selectifs and French Cup videos I gotta say my concept of "beauty" is changing .

As time goes by and Mal's become more popular to John Q. Public you will see more and more polarization between working and show line Mal's.
I do my part to prevent this rise in popularity.... every time someone asks me if my work dog is a dingo I say "Why yes, yes he is."

Exactly.
Life before bitework was pretty dull, I must say!

Matthew,
That is exactly what I do, people ask, all the time, looking confused, "IS THAT A German Shepard?", I smile and say, YES! I'v even had someone say is that one of those European Shepards? I knew what they meant, I said, no all those shepard variations is not true, there is really only the German Shepard, the rest is to make'em sound fancy
