I would like to know, who was the last showdog that could actually work and produce working pups? How long would it take through selective breeding to bring showdogs to a working level? Ed Frawley or Robert Vancamp would love to hear your opinions on this subject.
As I understand it, he was available for stud on the West Coast, but was not used nearly as much as the East Coast dog, Am & Can Gr Vic Ch Lance of Fran-Jo....a dog that contributed heavily to the long thigh bone, over-angulated look of todays American bred gsd.
I have heard that Yasko Von Farbenspiel & Scott Von Deodatus could really work. Of course that is only what I have heard.
I own a show puppy and those guys are his grandfathers so it might just be selective hearing. . Say what you will they are good looking dogs.
The first question is hard, if I were a breeder and had access to any dog going back in history, I wouldn't look at any "showdogs" born after 1975. There were a number of "showdogs" who produced nice working animals, but none that I'd be interested in that were born after 1975.
The second question is easy, I don't think it's possible to breed the showlines into a viable working bloodline. It's hard enough to breed the working lines into a viable working bloodline. (I guess the way I'd define viable working bloodline would be dogs that consistently produce litters where 50% of the pups could become capable PSDs, serious PPDs, or good sport dogs. Who's doing that with the working lines now?? LOL)
I'd personally give my left nut to have frozen semen from Bernd Lierberg, or Bodo Lierberg for that matter.
I'm not sure who would want that.
There are some dogs out there with a good bit of B and B in their lines. I got one, from that other Leerburg place.
For those to lazy to follow the links that Robert provided here goes
V Cliff vom Hühnegrab finished at the BSP between 1987 and 1990 finished 3rd,7th,2nd and 32th.
V Nastor vom Wolfsburger Schloß was impressive a 6 x Bsp participant who finished in the top 5 three time in 1996, 1997 and 1998. It is a shame more show dogs can't comptete like his father, he and his half brother did. Argus vom Hause Santiages who competed 3 time finishing 2nd in 1993, 51th in 1994 and 11th in 1996.
This proves V rated showlines can compete with selective breeding it is a shame too many breeders focus on the looks and not work ability atleast as far as dog sports.
