After a training session with my two GSD's and washing the "Klingons" off of one of them, I get this in my snail mail.
"Dear Mr. Jones:
Thank you for your interest in our rescue. We are herein returning your application fee of $10.00 in that we feel we are not able to place one of our German Shepherds in your home at this time.
VGSR works very diligently to rehome our dogs as pets, or more importantly, as a member of the family.
On our application under why you want a GS you listed schutzhund and k9 training which are areas we do not want our GS to have to live their lives. However, from time to time we do receive email and phone calls from someone who has either a very high energy dog they cannot control, or on occasion we “mis-read” a dog and find after we have brought it into a foster home that it will be better off as a working dog.
We have filed your application away in our “wants working dog” file and will be in touch should we come across one that will work for what you are looking for.
Again, thank you for your interest in our rescue.
Sincerely,
( A GSD Rescue)
The puppy I inquired about was about 5 months old, house broke maybe and difficult. The puppy was turned in because it was killing chickens, terrorizing cats and ran around non stop all day long. I figured "Gee, maybe a good K9/Sch candidite" The self rightious tone and their ignorance of sport dogs really got my goat. Next time I'm gonna lie my ass off
I think that the goals of rescue groups are admirable but all too often they are corrupted by the personal prejudices of the volunteers. We were turned down because my husband's dog was not spayed. The fact that the pup I was asking about was already neutered made no difference. Logic says if I intended to breed dogs I would have been getting an intact male but logic had no place in their decision. Given the fact that my husband's dog was going to both obedience and agility we obviously spent lots of time with our dogs. That meant nothing compared to the fact that our female dog could potentially produce a litter of puppies.
Well-meaning but ignorant. However you just may end up getting a call about that pup because if someone doesn't take a firm hand he will be 10 months old, twice as big, and even more difficult to handle.
We were turned down because my husband's dog was not spayed.
I work for a rescue. We cannot place dogs in a home that has intact animals or we risk loosing our Non Profit status and the funding we recieve. We also cannot place dogs that are intact or dogs that are not up to date on their shots. There are a lot of rules governing rescues that have nothing to do with the volunteer's personal beliefs.
Don'tcha know, intact animals are killers. They probably teach bad habits to the spayed and nutted dogs too.
Sorry for your misfortune.
Although I dont think ill put my GSD in those Sports,
I would Like to train my own Protection dogs and my G/F bless her soul doesnt want me to buy PB dogs, so i'd likely get them from a rescue if possible. Think they would deny me if I said Protection as one of the things. I sure hope not...
We have a "rescue" joke that keeps their animals here at the kennel. I am constantly telling them we can't take the sick animals and they just don't get it. I have dealt witha few rescue organizations out here and too many of them are coo-coo. My mal contracted kennel cough last week thanks to the geniuses. Luckily no one else got it. My biggest complaint is the people that come in and can't believe they have to pay for the spay or nueter. They all want a dog for 5 bucks or something. I wish I had potential clients like you. Life would be so good for the dogs!
