My psd has recently not wanted to out when on the bite sleeve. I think he is sleeve happy. If the aggitator dropps the sleeve my k9 just whips it around, and does not pay attention to anything else. He will out with the e/c on. Can anyone with a similar experience offer some techniques to help. We seem to be in a rut and need some fresh training options. Thanks..
Sounds like you got a few things goin on. For one thing you got a very equipment oriented dog. One thing that I do with this in equipment oriented dogs is this.Ill wear a bite sleeve on one arm and a lace up sleeve on the other(and of course bite pants). I have the dog sent for the bite and before he gets there Ill drop the bite sleeve to one side and if he goes for it Ill snatch his tail as he goes by or flank him. This redirects the dog on to me and away from the sleeve. When the dog is redirected back to me , I give the dog the bite on the other sleeve. I want the dog to focused on me on his way to me and not the sleeve. There are more ways to do it also. Consistency with the e-collar is very important on the outs.Double sleeve work, slipping one ,outing and rebiting on the other is a good excersise. Some times the dog is so tore up over anticipating the out because of past experiences when he didnt, that hearing the command wrecks their nerves and its even harder to get them to out. Many times it is surprising to find out how many dogs that wont out on command WILL out with a recall. In that case that gives you a good starting place to keep the dogs nerves in tact and build on it for the out.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Good point Dave sometimes the whole learning process or situation around the out is so distorted, unclear and therefore conflict that the dog almost goes into "over drive" and channels harder into the sleeve. The out is an exercise that relies on clarity and calmness and a lot of people make the mistke of making it compulsive in foundation. Sure it must be reliable, but the dog's association with it and that thereafter is to be conducive to a clear picture. Also where the foundation work is not correct and there is a problem with the dog not leaving, in that specific case the dog may find itself where it gets into all kinds of shit and despite all this the object to out the dog is not achieved the exercise may end where the dog gets the sleeve as they can't get the dog to out and with future training the dog actually starts seeing this whole process as a means or "formality" or part of the exercise and exhibits the behavior which brought about success in the past.
