I just saw Dogs With Jobs on tv and they were showing a PSD training for bark and hold and the decoy in the bite suit rewarded the dog with a ball for sitting in front and barking.Im not an LEO but that doesnt seem like a good idea.Any opinions?
I couldnt believe it when I saw it.They also actually said the dog considers the apprehension work just a big game. What happens if the dog doesnt want to play??I sometimes wonder if its all just a big PR thing and off camera they train differently. They might lose too much money and advertisers if they offended someone.LOL
i have seen videos of people working h and b's with a toy for young dogs especially dogs that cant handle the sleeve yet, i dont believe its necessary to teach it that young, but if i was going to teach a pup to h and b i would use a toy not a sleeve, remember they are only using prey, so it doesnt matter what the prey is, whenever the dog is older i am sure that they will switch to giving a bite on the sleeve for a reward for the h and b.
I could go along with that but this was a working PSD.On the street everyday. They portrayed the ball reward as maintainence training for the B and H.Im just a novice but after the dog is fully trained wouldnt the ball or toy just be a distraction?
Yeah, that's a bad idea. I'd hope that it's a show for TV's sake. I'm just a dirtbag protection dog tainer, but I'd have serious moral questions training a dog for a B&H using toy rewards.
You send a dog to do a bark and hold, or a find and bark (whatever you want to call it) IMO you had damn sure better prepare the dog for an ugly outcome.
That's one of the reason's I really really like Ed and Kevin's Bark and Hold for Police Service Dogs video.
I think that's probably the best Leerburg video I've seen.
It's why I believe and will always teach, when I send the dog to bite, he bites and holds until I tell him to stop. What the "bad guy" does is irrelavant.

When I did tactical security and protection I only used David's method............us in the business used to call Bark & Hold........Bark & Die. Alot of good dogs have been shot or stabbed while doing a bark and hold and they would be with us today if they had just took a good deep bite. If you don't want to get bit...when you are told "come out with your hands up or I'm sending in my dog!!!! just come out of the bushes or pay the price.
"If it comes down to me or him........its going to be me every single time"
