Ok, start my 6 month old GSD on the raw diet. I do have a few questions. In Cindy's article on feeding puppies, it says you can add yogurt and cottage cheese (which my dog loves) but when going thru the decussion boards Ed posted the dogs at Leeburg are never given these milk products. Is it ok to give it to puppies but not the full grown dogs or is this a typo or what? Also, when do you switch from the puppy menu to the adult menu. 1 year?
On a side note, we are switching to the raw diet as Elea has had a pudding stool since we got her. Vet said nothing to worry about, no worms, I just don't think this is normal. Also, it seems like this puppy has to go out every 1 1/2-2 hours for potty time. I don't remember this with our last puppy either. I am wonder if we have jsut conditioned her to potty this way. Her stools are not a lot, just very frequent.
Thanks for any advice.
Hmm...Ed gives a recipe for the puppy weaning formula on his "Whelping Puppies" video that includes plain yogurt, cottage chesse and goat's milk that I'm using right now with my landshark litter and it's working great. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I know Ed says to never give a puppy cow's milk as it can cause diarrhea. I don't remember him saying that about all milk products.....
Never give dogs milk. If you want to see an excellent formula for pups - go to my list of training articles and read the article on puppy formulas. You can read a few testimonials that people have sent too
Beverly, Pasteurized milk products will give dogs the runs. I have never had a problem at all with cottage cheese, yogurt, goats milk, evaporated milk.... Start with ground meats, raw eggs (2-3 times a week), canned mackarel or salmon, chicken necks, backs or wings with 1 or 2 TBLS of yogurt or cottage cheese. Also, adding a digestive enzyme such as Probios will help with the transition from kibble to raw.
