Even though I have raised and trained GSD for the last 12 years it has been about 8 years since I have had a pup of my own, so I'm a little rusty. My new pup is a male 6 mouths old, 74 pounds and very big boned. He is very heathy, active and has lots of drive. But his ears have me concerned. They were up when he was between 8 to 12 weeks old, but at about 13 weeks they both came down. Now I know this is not uncommen during teething, but his adult teeth are now completely in and his ears are still floppy. The bases of his ears are up and they flop over about half way up. At what age should I be concerned if his ears are still down?
Hes only 6 months and you said his ears were once up... it may just take a little time. My Kane (18mo. GSD) was the same way... seemed like his ears were late to stand but some dogs just have larger ears or weaker ears. Then when they were up they looked goofy and awkward... but finally took shape. The rule I hear is if they are up once they will stand again so maybe theyre just a little late. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Good luck with the pup.
My male pup just turned 6 months old also. His ears were up for a bit, but with teething they flopped again. Which is normal. He is also a very large GSD. He weighs in at over 70 lbs and is as tall as my 5 yr old female, just not as long. All of our pups had their ears up by the age of 6 months, but I have never had a pup of his size either. Neither sire or dam had floppy ears after maturity, so I am just hoping he is a late bloomer. Since he just lost his last two puppy teeth last week I am not going to panic yet. If they are not up more in the next week or so, we are going to tape or glue.
I'm concerned too. Sabian's ears have never been up.The dam had ears like a deer, so I hope that's the case. He's six months this week, and I've already started gluing, but I can't make them stay up with the glue either. They just flop forward like an ugly beanie. The base is not firm enough to make the ears stand even when glued.
Are there many drawbacks to having a dog whose ears don't come up, other than aesthetics? My 1 year old GSD has floppy ears; makes him look funky, but should I expect any other problems?
