Hi all...I am a newer member here, but have been lurking for awhile. I have an opportunity to adopt a 11 months old German Shepherd male. He is out a good lines, a nice combination of West German working & show lines. He has been in obedience training with my trainer since 12 weeks for puppy class. His owner's have a special needs child and another baby on the way, so that is their reasoning for giving the dog up. Another case of people jumping into something they shouldn't have in the first place...
Now at the time, my relatively peaceful home is made up of an 8 year old Cairn Terrier & a 3 year old GSD female, along with 2 cats. I would like to see if possibly this dog could fit into our household...I would love another dog to work on obedience training with and I have been wanting a male for a long time.
Does anyone have any tips on adding a dog to your household? Or do you all think I'm crazy!!??
You are not crazy, but you should go to the Leerburg.com website proper and read all of Ed's articles and q&A's about adding a new dog, what you need to do to prevent dominant behavior against your established dogs, maintaining control of what will be a dog pack, etc. There is a ton of stuff. Make sure you know what you are getting into before you make the decision to add a third dog.
