Stupid me, I changed my GSD pup’s diet too fast. He is about 3 months and 2 weeks. I used to feed him cooked chicken as in New York, I don’t trust raw chicken, but yesterday I added Beef to the chicken. I made the portion half and half. Half chicken and half Beef (Beef was cooked rare). This morning I gave him same food with one raw egg. (I had given him raw egg with chicken. No problem). Now he has upset stomach.
He just went again and very loose stool with little lumps of food. What should I do? I am really worried. Should I take him to the VET?? Should I give him lots of water and cut out his lunch? I was told that I could give him Pepto- Bismol. (May have spelled this wrong) I gave him one TUMS tablet in the morning.
I don't know how much pepto would help, but famotidine (pepcid ac) works really well and was prescribed quite frequently by the vet I previously worked for. The dosage is based on weight so you'll have to call your vet to see what he recommends. (I don't remember the conversion <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
You say that you don't "trust" NY chicken? Do you mean feeding it raw in general? or is there something wrong with chicken in NY? I don't see why there would be a problem wth feeding it raw, which is best for your dog. Cooked meat/food is BAD for your dog and has no nutritional value since the heat from cooking damages the enzymes and vitamins in the food. I wouldn't doubt if that is making your dog sick in some way or another. If he still has diarrhea is a day or so or stops eating/drinking, take him to a vet.

Thank you so much.
He is eating and drinking so far. I will see how it goes tomorrow. I have already made an appointment with my vet. Let’s hope I don’t have to take him for this reason.
I live in one of the suburbs of NYC. Because there aren't any farms around here, the chicken in the store could not be very fresh. ( This is just my assumtion). And with Salmonella in chicken meat, I did not think it was wise of me to give him raw. I had been giving him boiled chicken but perhaps the combination of rare cooked Beef with chicken and raw egg did the trick. I am still kicking myself for being so careless.
My poor pup. He wanted to have dinner, but I did not give him any. I wanted to give a rest to his stomach.
I'm glad to hear he's feeling better. Boiled chicken is a very bland, easy thing for dogs to digest. That is why alot of vets reccommend sick dogs to eat a mixture of boiled chicken or ground turkey with rice. It's easy on their stomach but doesn't provide hardly any nutrition. The sudden change to something different probably caused his upset tummy. I would really consider slowly switching him to raw meat and stop cooking his food. Dogs have strong bacterias and stomach acid to conteract and kill any bad bacteria, like salmonella, that they may ingest from eating raw food. Unfortuntly, humans don't have that strong of a digestive system, so we cook our food to kill the bad bacteria. See leerburg's article on the raw, natural diet for dogs: http://leerburg.com/diet.htm

Pepto-Bismol is NOT poisonous to dogs... it's poisonous to cats. Vets prescribe pepto, pepcid ac and more "human meds" to animals all the time. Knowing these things are a part of owning a dog. What's the point of taking your dog to a vet everytime he sneezes?

You're right it's NOT poisonous to dogs BUT it does contain Salicylates (ie., like aspirin) to which many dogs are sensitive to. The degree of sensitivity will vary with dog. Always check with your vet if you're unsure. Just as a precaution as I'm sure most have/are using Kaopectate--and for those unaware...It's my understanding that there has been a formula change and that this 'medication' now also contains Salicylates...
Anyways, always better to be safe than sorry. If your dog has these symptoms for a few days (3-5)...I'd have a vet check it out. Any food change is going to take a few days for a dog to adjust...however, be it diarrhea or vomiting...make sure the dog is HYDRATED in the meantime. IOW, Lots of liquids. Esp. puppies. If the stools aren't solidifying at all over a 3 day period (and he's on the SAME diet with no additives or changes); I'd have a vet look at him.
I looked at the website and Ed had mentioned IMODIUM AD. I gave just little more than one table spoon. This morning I fed him something little. His stool was not as loose as a pudding and he did not do a lot but just one small almost loose log. Let's see what happens after I feed him lunch. I have started to feed him but just little qty. I hope that is fine. Now I have noticed a lump on his lower end of stomach. I am taking him to the VET for that. I am very worried about the lump now. If it is not one thing it is another thing. I havn't slept for 5 weeks now. No..no he does not wake me in the night anymore. I sleep around 11 and he wakes me up at 5:00 every day with nights trips here are there. But he is such s sweetheart. Please hope this lump is nothing and his stomach gets better
