Hi - Im not sure if this is in the right place? I am getting a pup in about 3 months. the problem is I purchaced a house in a new community/development and the HOA (home owners association) requires a specific fence for all residents---its a 6 ft iron welded fence......they look great except for my yard its going to cost around 10 grand and first we have to get all the landscaping done $$$$$$. The neighbors could split the cost --or not if they dont want a fence ! I feel that all of this cost at once might be too much>>>>>>> I dont think the HOA will let me have a kennel/run outside ======== I do have a large unused basement and a free car space in the garage===== Should I put one in there for when we are gone-----or is a crate ok for certain lengths of time . Evenually everything will work out but not sure whats ok for now.???? any oter good advise Thanks
I would just let my dog live in the house in a crate, and try to get home for lunch and let the pup out.
That is why I would never buy a house under the real estate dictators, called HOA. What a freakin American Dream, the man, works hard to have a nice place and he has to ask the virtual Landlords if he can have a freakin 10X10 Kennel in the yard he worked so hard to own! HOA's can eat $%*&
Good point -I guess I never really paid attention on a warm day---I went in the garage today --it was 82 outside--and I wouldnt want to stay in there. But the basement is really cool and comfy. Im not against a crate but I dont know how long is acceptable = and it seems small ? Unemployed now due to state to state move and have no idea of work schedule or location--might work out???? Some people down the street have a big lab and they are trying to use a wireless fence?-----the dog looks older and sort of mellow----not sure if this will work for a pup.
I sure wouldnt rely on one of those fences.Sounds like a crate is your best bet for now.Maybe you can figure out something else in the mean time.I have a 5 mo Mal and the only secure place to keep him is a crate or a totally enclosed well made kennel(read:not chain link!).
I know when its hot this summer my dogs are coming in under the AC.On a young pup they need to be let out more.I wouldnt want them to be crated more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.A little older dog can be left 7 to 8 hours no problem.Beyond that youll need to have someone to let them out and excercise.Of course this is not ideal. You have to consider how all that crating is going to affect your dog mentally.I know my pup just gets frustrated and really loads up.When I let him out of his kennel he has to bite something and I am always the closest thing...ouch.
Guess it depends on how much you are willing to pay...though if you figure in the cost of your dog and your losses should that dog run off or worse, be stolen, then the cost of a good kennel doesn't look so high.
Priefert makes a premium kennel. (click on "Product" then "Canine/kennel kits")
I don't think they sell direct, but mainly through ranch and feed type stores (ie, Tractor Supply).
I can say from experience (we use one) that these are not only strong, but good looking, and are expandable with additional panels. They have a lockable door, an important feature not only against theft but in keeping young or inquisitive children out.
BTW, the prices quoted on the web site are high...we didn't pay near that much for our 10X10, so you need to check with a dealer for a more realistic price...
I think there is a brand called "Magnum" kennels. They are just as well made as Priefert but maybe a little cheaper.I think I saw them at Tractor Supply stores.Or if you have good friend that can weld you buy the materials and have one made for half the cost. Its not as difficult as it sounds. But maybe not an option for everyone.Just throwing out ideas. You can even use the Priefert type kennels in an indoor outdoor setup on the side of your garage. You have to knock a hole in the wall though so dont forget to discuss it with your spouse
