I asked Ed Frawley this question, and he recommended I ask it here because it would take a long time to answer. So, here it is. I recently watched a video clip of some French police service dogs. They seemed much more aggressive to me than the demos with dogs I've seen here (at least locally). It really stood out to me because I had just seen the video clip, and a few days later I was working at a local P.D. safety day (I am in our county's Sheriff Posse) and the dogs in the demos at the safety day just didn't go at it like the ones in the video. In fact, one of the dogs in the video was a little too aggressive, as the handler had to pull the dog off, and when he did the dog latched onto him.
My question is; do they train their dogs to be more aggressive than our law enforcement agencies? It looked like they were using Belgian Malinois, but I am not positive since I have never seen one except in photos. Are they more aggressive?
Any light anyone can shed on this for me will be appreciated.
As I understand it,G I G N is the french's elite of the elite counterterrorism unit. They are not called in to negotiate , thats for sure.
Comparing your local PD to them is like comparing your standard service handgun to an MP5 submachinegun..IMO.
As mentioned above, the dogs (and handlers/officers) you see in those videos are NOT normal, street police officers. They are members of France's elite GIGN counter-terrorism team (although, I thought someone had said they were members of Germany's GSG-9 team.) Regardless, they are still not "police dogs" in the traditional sense.
These are dogs that have most likely been selected specifically for certain traits because of the type of training they will receive and the way the dogs will be deployed.
It's like comparing your local department's police dog to a dog used by the FBI's HRT or Army's Delta. Apples and oranges. Different dogs/training for different missions.
