When you play tug of war with a pup you use the little jute material puppy tug.
No in this case you don't have another person do it. Its normally your getting the pup to get a better grip.
Now the dog gets older, you've upgraded through the different styles.
Now we start working a sleeve. The question is, right now when your trying to get the dog to learn a better grip meaning with a full mouth, is it a bad thing for you as the onwer to mess around with it? Meaning you putting the sleeve on instead of some other person like a decoy.
You can back tie the dog in a harness and use a soft sleeve ( such as http://www.leerburg.com/860.htm ) for bite building and this method works well with most dogs. Most people could do far more bite training by themselves than they normally do.
This method is shown well in the video "Preparing Your Dog for the Helper" 310-D. I highly recommend it.
Hi,
I have a couple questions about my 9 month old GSD. His drives are a little lazy ( which is my fault, due to me not working on it enough). But when I show my arm to him, he attacks it like there is no tomarow. I use a shipping boot for horses as my sleeve. Will it be bad for me to work on his prey drive that way? Is it ok for ME to be the prey? I know this is just a game to him, but I don't want to have him crazed on my arm. If you can give me any advise I would surley appreciated it. He has a wonderful grip on my arm "the scars prove it", but with other toys he doesn't have the same strive to get.
Maybe he knows this is his only time to get me hahahaha!!
Get a real sleeve, first things first.
And actually for good training, you'll need a puppy sleeve, then a soft sleeve and then a trial sleeve if you really want to do it right.
