Pretty cool I just can't believe they disclosed to the public that their dogs are trained to bite the right arm, where the weapons are most likely held. If I was a criminal, Guess what arm I won't offer if ever chased by a police dog up in that area. May work, May not, but what if it does.
Also, with all their dogs dying of bloat, they ought to look at giving their dogs the surgery that the military does to prevent their dogs from being able to get bloat. where they sew the stomach to the wall.

That was a nice video, kinda sad though. I can sympathize with anyone whose ever lost a pet, it's the worst feeling. Seems like all these muts ever give us is love, it's so hard when they have to go.
About the biting the right arm thing. Yes, they did say that, but they also said, if the right are is not available....watch it again, you'll see it.
After watching that video, it gave me a clearer understanding of why personal protection dogs are not always good patrol dogs.

It would be a nice try but wouldn't work . That's what the bitesuit training was for . If the dog can't get the arm it will grab something else .
You're welcome to come and give it a try though .
Both of the deathes were from an intestinal bloat and I don't think they have a surgery like the ones for a stomach bloat to prevent it.

My bust, didn't hear them say they trained the dogs everywhere else, The first time I just heard them say they train on the right arm. Jim I said that probably wouldn't work, and the reason I said that is because if the dog is real he probably would bite somewhere else, but I wouldn't have chanced anything by disclosing specifically where our dogs were trained to bite.
As for the surgery, I'm in the military and work dogs sometimes with the MWD Teams here on base, yes, there is in fact a surgery to prevent Bloat, all MWD get it Prior to the start of their training at Lackland, or upon recieving the dog at Lackland from a vendor.

Chris ,
Both were intestinal twists . My fault for stating bloat. It's differant then a stomach bloat or stomach torsion.
To my knowledge there is no preventative surgery for that and usually by the time it is diagnosed it's too late.

Jim,
I'll get with the kennel master and find out about the surgeries, and get back to you, as maybe a topic of discussion with your department. I know the words were quoted to me, they recieve preventive surgery that prevents them from getting bloat in any way. I'll check on this for you and get back to you after I return to work Tuesday (Long weekend)
PS: I want you to know I didn't in anyway mean you guys dogs weren't capable or serious dogs, just stating a possible point (however unlikely) about OPSEC (operational security). I could just be thinking to much on a Military level. I applaud you guys's devotion to the K9 program, see to many depts. scrapping by.

Chris ,
Thanks , I didn't take it that way.
I know about the preventative surgery for stomach bloat and it was one of the first questions asked if there was a similiar surgery for intestinal twists but we were told there wasn't . If you find out other wise I would appreciate the info . Thanks.

My understanding has always been that the intestinal twist is quite rare…. Am I wrong on this? Having two dogs in the same training class with it seems very odd.
