What are some of the ways people co-own a dog? Does a breeder give the dog to a close friend, someone he/she can trust, but the breeder has the breeding rights? I don't understand how the process works. Two people can own it on paper, but do both parties financially support it? Do both owners take turns keeping the dog, or training it? What is the main purpose for this? Is it primarily for breeding?

Curtis I'm sure it has worked out for some people. I have co-owned a few dogs before, and it always starts off nice, but usually ends in a nightmare

There are as many different co-own agreements as there are dogs. It is up to the individual and the breeder. Some have very loose restrictions, some have more hoops to jump through than it is worth. Some you have to pay for part of the dog, some you will get it for free or close to it.
Primarily it is for breeding, though I do know that a lot of kennels into showing will also co-own a top prospect out to experienced handlers in order to get that dog in the ring.

I've co-ownd a coupl of dogs with people I've know really well. The lady that bred my Border Terriers always co-owns for a number of reasons. Breeding rights, keeps them out of puppy mills (hopefully) and also she wants titles on all her dogs. CH, Obd, working, tracking, agility, whatever. Once the dogs are titled, she usually drops the co-ownership.
I wouldn't do it without really understanding the contract, AND knowing the breeder quite well.

So it sounds like just about anything could work with co-owning a dog, as long as it is in the contract. Old Earth Dog, in your post you said that once the dog would receive some titles that the co-ownership would be dropped. Would the breeder give the dog and full ownership to the other person, the one that has been training and doing all the work with it?

Yes! Titles on a dog were a priority with her, and semed to do a lot for her reputation as a breeder. She was VERY picky about who got her pups. I always felt she was a responsable breeder even though the breed ring was her first love. If no title was put on the dog, she stayed on the registration papers. Her contracts were made to suite the individual owner. Not everyone's cup of tea, but she kept close ties with the people who got her pups. I have had two of them and never bothered to ask her to drop here name from the papers.
My old, now gone Border terrier, Rags, was an awesome dog. Finished his CH undefeated with a WD at the National Specialty. Best Colored Dog in Show at a working terrier show, judge by an English terrier man, and was one hell of a good working terrier.
I've heard horror stories about co-ownerships. I never had a problem.

Just a few questions...
Is co-ownership of an animal something that all good breeders do?
Is it something that is hard to enforce upon resistance with a buyer or co-owner?
What is the buyer's view of purchasing a dog with co-ownership in the contract? Easy to live with or find another breeder?
I don't know too much about co-owning an animal..sounds like it could get sticky. I read about the problem with Tammy Dempsey's dobbie in another thread and it sounds like a headache! I hope she can pursue the scum who tricked them and save her dog.

No not all breeders will co-own. Some only sell dogs that way. It is as individual as the breeder and buyer as I stated above. It is not necessarily the mark of a good or bad breeder.
Co-owning can be a good thing and it can go terribly wrong. Once a dog is no longer in your posession it becomes very hard to get a dog back. Same goes for selling a dog with contract restrictions.... They are only as good as the people behind them.

Not so much to do with "co-ownership" but I have a question about ownership rights/breeding rights when you buy a dog from a breeder.
My first question is this; if one were to buy a dog from a breeder, particularly buying a female dog, since one bought and paid for the dog, does one have the right to breed that dog? Or do breeders only sell females already spayed, or do they stipulate whether or not one can breed in a buyer’s agreement? Is this decided on an individual basis or is there a general rule that most people go by?
My second question is; what does “VOM” and “VON” mean in regards to dogs’ names? What is the difference between the two? Do these terms only refer to GSD’s or other breeds also? Dog Vom Labrador?
Thanks.
