SAN FRANCISCO — A boy was fatally mauled in a pit bull attack at his San Francisco (search) home. Police killed one of two dogs in the house, and captured the second.

Any idea if the dogs were provoked. I know usually it is the owners fault for not training the dog properly, just curious if you have any more info
Treat them like they are animals.
Train them like they are animals.
Love them like they are people. |

could of been any damn thing, food or toy aggression, pack dominance, prey drive kicked for some vague reason, the BBC had an article that unsupervised children in baby swings sometimes would load up a dog. It still falls on the head of the parents and the byb. In my area we have three kinds of pits: Thug pits for protecting drugs and fighting, Pits that could of been nice dogs if the owners would of taken the minimum of training, and the true family dog/fur kid.

Acccording to the Los Angeles Times, the victim, a twelve year old boy, was at home with his mother and the two pits when the neighbors heard the mother screaming "Get them out of here!". Who called the police and what happened in the apartment is not known. Sadly, this took place very near the location of the Pressa Canario attack that took the life of a young woman not long ago. IMO these are not apartment dogs. They have special needs and require owners that can fulfill these needs. This is all very sad.

Somehow, I doubt that these dogs never showed any signs of worrysome behavior before this incident. There are a lot of really scary pit bulls out there today. I see them being produced by both thugs who prize the dangerous temperaments, and by show/pet breeders who make excuses for the dangerous temperaments. Unfortunately, the keepers of the breed tend to be morons of lower than average intelligence, that don't have the breed's or the public's best interests in mind. In the end, I'm afraid that government induced extinction is probably inevitable. The good can't keep up with the bad, much less outshine them.

I will disagree with you here. I live in an apartment with two pit bulls and a Malinois, all males. Why yes, I am freaking crazy
The older pit bull is a show bred couch potato, so he honestly doesn't need a lot. The younger was bred by somebody who does a lot of obedience and agility, and is kept active with obedience and training in Schutzhund. The Malinois is training in French Ring.
Most people wouldn't do right by my dogs if they had a ginormous house on hundreds of acres. It's not where you live that counts, it's the dedication to the dogs.

This is sad news. This boy's life could have been spared if he was not left alone in the house with these two dogs. What a bad situation.

There are a lot of really scary pit bulls out there today
There's also, alot of scary dogs out there period, Bottom line is if you decide to keep an animal in your house with kids, you better have complete control over all situations, one problem is people bring these dogs into their home and never establish a pack order. So when the dog feels the child is challenging his pack order (that they allowed the dog to think he has) there is problems. You never know the full story of why a dog has bitten or mauled unless you live there, was there, and seen the history, my sisters pitbull a loving one I might add, jumped a fence and bit a high school kid in the ass, but what you didn't see is that everyday they got off the bus they passed the chainlink fence (which sat on the sidewalk damn near) and hit cue with rocks, There was an old lady neighbor who had warned them before to leave those dogs alone, almost the entire school year had gone by with them aggitating cue, before he decided to jumped the fence and end that BS. The boy had to have 3 surgeries on his ass, I bought cue a steak the next time I saw him had that old lady not been there, you would have only seen on tv pitbull attacks kid as he gets off school bus. I use to take it upon myself to investigate cases involving pitbull attacks, when I volunteered for the humane society, and in our area (big pitbull population in New Orleans) 91% had been caused by previous agitation for no reason to the dog. The Thing is when they bite they do damage that puts them on the news, because it is usually a bad bite. I hate to hear people stero type pitbulls and most that have something to say have never even been near one. This was clearly the parents fault, and could have happend with any other kind of dog (with no supervision) that could have felt his pack order was in jepordy which could have been the case.

I will agree with Chris "There's also, alot of scary dogs out there period"
With this said I will add that there are a lot of scary dog owners out there. I get emails every day from people who do not know one thing about PACK drive and RANK drive.
I get emails every day from people who say their dogs NIP kids. My god - a NIP is a dog bite.
Dogs that bite people are dogs that do not have proper training. Dogs that kill kids have given off MANY signs of aggression to kids.
I am proud that I testified in Kansas about the pack of Rots that killed an 11 year old boy - this women is serving 11 years in prison for murger. SHE BELONGS THERE.
