I saw some one mention soft teeth as a flaw in dogs. It is obvious why, but I had not realized that dogs had soft teeth. I think that Roland did. People had often asked me if I filed his canines down (I was always amazed just by the question) because they were flat on top. I was starting to wonder about having to cap them when I saw some yellow center show. He also did have one tooth missing (small one behind the canines).
What causes soft teeth? Is is genetic or a nutritional deficiency? Can you help a dog that has soft teeth with suppliments? Is it linked to missing teeth? Can you tell in a puppy that it has soft teeth?
I don't know if this is the same as 'soft teeth' but my pup was diagnosed with enamel hypoplasia. She is losing the outer enamel caps off several of her teeth including her lower canines and back molars. The vet says this condition is usually a result of poor health of the bitch or of a parvo infection as a pup.
We first noticed the missing enamel around 6 months. I am guessing if we don't cap these teeth (she's 11 months) they will quickly wear to flat tops...
My Malinois has weird little lines in his teeth. We consulted with a dental specialist, who believes it is cosmetic. They look like cracks, and make me worry. I'll probably get a second opinion down the road.
