I never would have thought this would be my first post..
Anyways, we are looking for a working line male pup. If anyone could point out some good breeders that would be great. We already have one German Shepherd who is currently working to get ScH I and Sch II titles, but not Sch III because she is also going into therapy work. With the new pup we would hope to get him all three titles. We are moving into a new house on two acres in one week and don't need this puppy anytime soon. We want to take our time in choosing him. So any leads would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Leerburg Board!
As mentioned, the owner of this site breeds working dogs (only), as do many members of this forum.
Since advertising litters is forbidden on this board, it is best to ask for PM's with suggestions.
A bit off the subject, though not really.....I may be wrong but I was under the impression that most service and/or therapy orgs (like Delta) would not accept ANY schutzhund training in a dog; there is not much difference in the exercises between a Sch 1, 2, 3, just increased difficulty.
Hope you won't go through all that effort just to be disappointed to be turned down...

Check with the therapy groups as mentioned. You might be limited in only doing the BH, OB1,2,3 and TR1,2,3 with your current dog.

Hi Caitlin,
Ann is right, Delta will not accept Sch trained dogs. If you really want a dog for therapy work, try to get a 'pet' from working lines. Even then a 'good working line GSD' may not be suitable for Therapy work.
What I am referring to is the aloofness a dog may display in time. My GSD pup was extremly socialized and very friendly, up to about September last year (she was 2 yr three months then). Her sharpness has increased and upon introduction to new people, she will sniff them and then come lay down by me and have no interest in being petted or their attention. (now that's a good dog!) I am pleased that she still has her soft spot for children and likes their attention.
This is a GSD trait and would not make for a warm, fuzzy therapy dog. (BTW, for fun, I did take her for Delta testing and she did well in all phases but one, the play acting scene of an agitated patient in a big fuzzy robe who got stroppy with the 'nurse'. She had some designs on that robe Great dog, no regrets and she earned her corn last September! Wouldn't want it any other way!
There are dogs who can be a big schmooze with people, but I would avoid the lines known for their sharpness and civility. Ya got lots of research to do! Happy reading and good luck!

I agree. I got a working line pup for my therapy dog, before I knew any better. His prey drive is high and he's been barking at people since he was 8wks. When people go to pet him, heis very selective at who he interacts with. He's 6 mos, I can't wait to see what he's like at 18mos. Now I've decided to do obedience with him.
Excuse me, does he bite? |

I'd personally be very interested in a leerburg dog out of either Blitz, Brix, or Xando. . .in that order.
I have a female out of Blitz right now from another kennel and she's pretty ok.

We already have a GSD who is currently working to be a therapy dog. Whether or not she can do Schutzhund we are still going to get a new pup, just for Schutzhund. We currently have two dogs, the German Shepherd (who is from German, American, and Canadian lines) and a mutt who screams if anything runs at him.

It still burns me up that a dog with a SchH title can't do therapy work. My old Rottie bitch had a SchH II, American UDT and Canadian UD title and we were tested and approved for therapy work by TDI with no problem ( this was over ten years ago, of course, but that dog brought a lot of nursing home residents a lot of joy back in her day ).
But nowadays due to the narrow minded views of a few of the poorly informed people in charge of the Therapy Dog organizations, dogs that actually work for a living are screwed when it comes to Therapy work.

And for my upcoming Leerburg dog, I'm impressed with both CJ and Brix as a Sire.......just as soon as the little fur-covered terrorists from my litter are all shipped out and gone ( my pants legs.....my poor pants legs...... )
My current working dog is out of a Leerburg bred dam, and he's literally a once in a lifetime dog for me. That speaks volumes about Ed's breeding program, in my view!
