Just for general information, a number of shops at Colonial Williamsburg's Merchants Walk area are dog friendly and all the dogs I saw there were well mannered. Some of the shops put out dog biscuits from the specialty store and water for your dog. I wouldn't let my dog drink from a public bowl but I appreciate the thought. Thought you guys near here would like to know

Thanks for the info, Dennis. I am always looking for dog-friendly places. Another great place to visit is the Mackinaw area of Michigan...lots of good things to do with your dogs

And for anyone in the Orlando area, Park Avenue in Winter Park is dog friendly, stores that have a water bowl out front welcome dogs, and theres several restaurants, including one called 311 Park Avenue (which is also its address) that allows dogs at the outdoor seating.
If anyone plans to come to FL on vacation, or if you live here already, pick up a book called "The Dog Lover's Companion To Florida" - my local Borders had a bunch in stock so it's readily available.

You know....I wouldn't mind a forum here just for dog friendly places, boarding kennels, hotels, airlines and the such. It'd be a handy place to look through for dog trainers and pet owners alike.
Just a thought.....

I think that is a great idea especially since my dog travels with me 99% of the time

I've seen that site. What I meant was personal recommendations from forums members instead of sites that are basically advertiser's fluff.
I like to hear of first hand experiences, as they usually tell a more accurate story.

Don't know if anyone may be heading here in the fall, but Wheeling West Virginia, there is a hotel right beside the lighted bridge. Gosh I cannot remember the name of it....seems like it was a cheaper chain like a Best Western. But they only charged $10/per dog per stay. So for $20.00 we got to bring Alf and Xena. They actually welcomed us, they really were very nice about it and didn't snub us at all. Anyway, wheeling is where they have "The Lights at Oglby Park" Christmas lights....it's a big hit here, plus they have Gambling on the island and alot of people come for that. The hotel has a nice little eating area and you can see the lighted bridge from it and it's really a neat site after dark, because the bridge is all lit up.
Grand Central Mall here in Parkersburg allows dogs...though they are not real friendly about it, it's a nice place to go in the winter
Also the Econolodge in Lexinton Kentucky takes dogs. Decent rooms, a fridge for the raw food, continental (doughnut) breakfast and it's only $35.00 a night and they charge $10.00 per dog per day. There is a place to walk them and let them potty.
Niagra Falls I saw ALOT of people with their dogs...all kinds too, sheepdogs, Dobes, mutts, Lhasas...
Charleston West Virginia has a few dog shows, so you know they have to accept dogs. I woul suggest calling around. Most of the hotels are right by the Town Center Mall. Though I don't think you can actually bring your dog in there, most of the hotels are just walking distance from it.
Hope this helps and yes Will, this would be a nice reference thing. 'Cause even though they accept dogs, doesn't mean they aren't going to be asses about it. Good to have a heads up about it.

We discovered this winter that when a hotel says Dogs allowed you may need clarification on what that means. We stayed at a Days Inn and they expected the dogs to be crated at all times. I know that not all Days Inn do that but this one said there would be fines if your dog wasn't crated and got hair on the bed or furniture.

Guys,
Don't I feel left out in NYC. Me and My poor pooch. I guess I should look at the website for dog friendly place. One place I also know is very friendly, PARIS- because no one curbs after the dogs They wait for the municipals van to clean the street. Living in perfect harmony with nature!!
