I have not experienced this issue with any of my previous dogs in protection training. At 8 months old my male pup started hummping the puppy cushion after protection when he was allowed to take it back to the trailer. He tended to only do this when I put my hand in to take it out. He got more and more determined with this behaviour, to the point that he actually growled when I wanted to take it out. (He does drop the article and look at me, then as soon as I try to take it, he goes a humping away!)After that I stopped letting him take his reward into the trailer. Then last night after his back up bite he ran a short distance away from the helper and I, dropped the puppy sleeve and pee'ed on it, then he proceeded to hump it! Otherwise he is a very nice puppy, high in drive and the protection work is really good.
I would just like some opinions on why he is doing this and what all your advice would be on how to stop it and if it should be stopped at all! It was hell of a funny at first but now it is a bit embarassing!
You are correct Will, there is definately no threat in the protection work. He is now almost a year and still working in prey drive.
I just hope he does not get worse and try to hump my leg or something.
