I chatted with my local butcher today and he said he could get me a 30 pound box of duck carcasses for $29. That seems like a good price to add some variety in the BARF diet. I will need to ask him if they've been slaughtered or if they are "sport" ducks brought in by hunters. Of course I'll reject the sport ducks as I don't think that feeding my dog lead shot remnants is the best thing for them!!!
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had experience with duck in the BARF diet. Grind the bird? Whole? Half at a time? Only once a week (b/c it is so fatty comparatively)?

I would not raw-feed wild game of any sort to my dogs. I know meat is better for them raw, but not wild game. If they get venison, they get it cooked. Too many parasites in wild game, and I don't want my doggies (or myself) acquiring any.

Oh I can't edit my post, so I'll just post another one. I meant only if the ducks were wild game that I would not feed them raw. I mentioned venison because I have some in my freezer.

Would you be so kind as to show me documentation of tapeworms being in the muscle of wild animals. I am aware there are many ways for dogs to come down with the dreaded tapeworm I have not heard of this.

The risk of trichinosis and other worm organisms continue to exist in wild game. Trichinosis is still common in wild game. This is especially important for the barbecue Q'munity, with wild boar, bear and other game. All wild game must be assumed to contain trichinosis!! Now, some common sense: trichinosis is killed at 137º F. But only a fool would each wild game cooked to 140º F -- simply because of the risk that the thermometer is not accurate, that the meat wasn't measured properly, etc. A cook should give this meat a 15% margin of error -- which means that, if the internal temperature must get to 137º F, the cook should cook it until it reaches 160º F (137º F + 15%).
Note that, technically, trichinosis and tapeworm are different organisms. Both are worms, both infect humans, and both are caused by eating infected and undercooked pork and certain other meat."
