I think that a dog that doesn't methodically and regularly exercise its jaws, will bite down and soften the grip, and then bite down again, etc. Many informed people say there are also genetic and conditioning reasons...which I completely agree with...for softening the grip.
I must admit I have never interviewed a dog, but if I bite down on something, I can't keep full pressure on for long.
A dog must chew and grip frequently to develop and maintain its jaw muscles.
I think spring poles are an interesting and entertaining addition.
We have a number of pits on our Schutzhund team. The ones that are worked at home on a spring pole do excellent Schutzhund work but have shallow bites. They initially hit deep, then loosen up before they start to shake the sleeve. The explination is that the pit will bite shallow in order to breath easily while on a grip. I have no idea how true this may be. All of the pits on the team are very confident dogs.
I have recently seen young rott being returned from person that used spring pole for him. It was bragg thing "yea he can hang there for half an hour"... Person returned dog because he could not control him anymore (but that does not matter here).
Same dog (13 months) was tested on soft sleeve and just fell down from it. OK - first time, i have seen dog that have never seen sleeve (kenneled dutch dog) that when we bought him did not know what to do first two times and than left me a nice bruise through suit third time... but no this rott just did not catch on. So i'd say its temperament thing, he can hang there all day on spring pole for all i care if he can't even bite man in sleeve...
Much more i like bite developement with decoy where dogs legs are off the ground, leesh is tight and dog has to bite hard or loose bite for that session (ofcourse, dog is given chance to correct bite).
