When I went outside to say good morning to my rottweiler, I was shocked to find that her jowls are really swollen. She looks like she swallowed a softball. Could it possibly be from a wasp sting? The swollen area is soft, not a hard lump, but takes up all the loose skin in the throat area. She does not tend to be sore, does not care if I manipulate the area. Can I give this a day or so to see if it subsides or is a vet visit today neccesary?
Thank you

I hate to tell you this but it could be lymphoma. This happened to me with a dog last year. Once day he was fine the next day we had to put him to sleep - very sad. It comes on quickly.
we made the decision to put him down rather than to allow him to go through the weeks of suffering
I just talked to my vet. He had me give her 75 mg of benadryl now and another 50 mg in 6 hrs. I mentioned the concerns and he didn't seem to be too worried. If it does not show any improvement or seems to be worse by late this afternoon, I will take her in.
Thanks for being here.

Will - when I first read your post I thought you said he may have swollen up from eating a "beer" - I thought - how interesting a dog that has my problem (swelling up from drinking beer)
With that said I would like to hear the end of this storey from the owner
< Will looks down at his own...um, impressive sized gut >
Ed.....I have no good reply to make there, buddy!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
After 3 days on the benadryl, most of the swelling is down, but a hard knot remains just under her jaw. I took her in to the vet today. He wants to see her again on Tuesday to be sure that it is still going down. He is still leaning toward a bite of some kind - not snakebite. He said it could be hornet since we do have an issue with those in the area of her doghouse and water bucket. Even I am afraid of those. They are much worse than regular wasps. I think we are on the road to recovery. Thanks for all your input.
