My 3 year old Malinois lacerated her right hind foot on Wednesday evening and surgery yesterday revealed that she had severed the tendon. The tendon has been repaired and she is now on the long road to recovery. Actually, I think that it's going to feel like an eternity! Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to help alleviate boredom for her. It's only day one after the surgery and she is already whining in her crate. I do plan on getting her some bones to chew on but the stores are closed today with it being a holiday. Any other suggestions for me?? She is on crate rest for 3 weeks and after that she will start physiotherapy provided there have been no complications. We are hoping that she will be fully recovered in 2 to 3 months but I have been warned that it could take up to 6 months to heal <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
What do you think of the idea of putting her crate on a wagon and walking around the neighborhood? Do you think that would get her too wound up or would she find it pleasing?
There are three constants in life: Death, taxes and the love of a dog.
I have found that putting on a snug t-shirt (if the dog is in a comfortable place) can have a calming effect kind of like swaddling a baby.
"wife-beaters" as we call them in the south, are pretty good for this since they tend to be cut skinny. Uhh - they are the sleeveless mens undershirts, whatever they are really called.
Thanks for the suggestions Nancy and Bob. I will look into both.
Once crate rest is finished, she will be seeing a rehap specialist that will determine how best to increase her activity. I strongly suspect that swimming will be included in the regimen as the vet does not want her to lose much muscle tone.
