i have 2 puppies 5 mon, black lap and a 8mon presa and if my family is gone they like to destroy stuff what can i do i tried punishing them and they just don't care can someone help me?
i mean i crated them when i was in an apartment then i let them out and they did fine but now i moved into a house and for the first week or so they did fine but all of a sudden they started going crazy
Each time your pups get to chew things up they are rewarded by the behaviour itself. So by leaving them loose and unsupervised you are basically letting them train themselves to be destructive.
Sounds like your pups are going through teething to me and they will chew. Do not be too harsh on them. Give them things they can chew on and keep them away from things they can't by using the create when you are not there to stop them. This should be over in a couple of months. They like to chew on frozen things it helps the pain I think. Give them some frozen raw chicken quarters or something like that. If they are not teething then an electric collar is excellent for breaking this behavior.
Punishment for chewing with people new to dogs goes something like this: You come home and see that the dog has torn something up. Dog looks at you and slinks off. You punish dog because "He knows he did wrong" Here is the way this looks to the dog. You leave, dog gets bored. Boredom creates tension, which is relieved by chewing. Dog hears you come home and is happy. Dog sees your body language change and gets out of town. At no point does the dog know what it is being punished for. Next time you leave the house the dog freaks because it will be punished when you get home and chews more stuff to relieve the tension. You punish again. repeat until dog destroys entire house because you are not communicating what the deal really is. When you put a dog in a crate or outside kennel, you put a toy in for him to chew on so he has something to do. You are taking him out of the situation where he can make mistakes, and or be put in the above pressure cooker. So what you do is have suppervised time in the house gradually getting longer and longer until he can be in the house by himself, or you have figured out that he needs to stay in the crate when you are gone. I have three who can be in the house and one..... well there is no way <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
