Hello, I have a 16 week old czech male puppy an dhe tries to eat dead birds who have fallen out of their nest. I try to catch him before he gets to the bird, doesent always work. Since he supposed to be used in Schutzhund training , I am a little reluctand to punish him when he has the bird in his mouth. What do I do scruff him to let the bird go? Or let him eat it?
I Have a 10 week old Czech/DDR puppy myself. my first one that I'm going to train for Sch. What I've been doing when "Erika" finds something disagreable is tell her "Aus", take away the item and give her something else to chase and play with. Erika has managed to locate every toad and kid's lost toy in my back yard. I'm of the opinion that sick puppies are hard to train.
Thanks Dennis! My puppy is also czech/ddr lines. Tried the AUS, it's not quite working yet. Workes with my west german lines, he on the other hand seems more stubborn and won't let the baby bird go when I tell him to.
I probably should not be doing this but I've been lifting her off the item I want her to 'aus' but I don't know any other way. Hopefully Will and the other guys have recovered from the "ASR" trails and help us out
And if you don't get there fast enough, consider it another source of protein...
I'm making light of this, but health issues aside, dogs are carnivores and if left to their own devices would eat a downed bird. Making a big fuss with the dog is probably counter productive.
We have barn swallows nesting near the house and babies fall out all the time. I try to get to them before our dogs or resident rat snake does (maybe there is more than one; they all look alike to me), but...Nature is not a socialist environment: it's survival of the fittest.
I would be concerned about tape worms at the most, other than that who cares?
