I recently got an 8 week old male Australian Kelpie puppy, bred from working parents. I have raised puppies in the past, but never have I had this problem... This puppy whines. All the time... In his crate, in the kitchen with a baby gate up, when he's out and about in the living room - everywhere, all the time. It's driving me crazy. I have a vet appointment scheduled for Tuesday, but if it's not anything medical, what could it be?

I agree- this is a breed that DEMANDS to be exercised, even at such a young age. Prepare yourself (if you haven't already-lol) for hours of play- tennis balls, frisbees, old socks, etc. They are fantastic at agility as well, and then there is that whole herding thing ...just remember to keep play sessions short for very young puppies, and do them often.

Okay...two Kelpies and a Coolie?
From someone with a Mal and a Border collie (and who is a big fan of Kelpies) I am SO admiring your energy. Here's to the herding workaholics. Or is that working herdaholics? I can never keep that straight...

I love my dogs, wouldn't trade them for the world, but there are some days when it seems nothing goes right... Today for example, came home very tired with a major headache, dogs were so excited to see me knocked over their VERY FULL water bowls - twice. Then Kelpie puppy had diarhhea (vet appointment tomorrow) and got it all over himself and everything humanely (or canine-ly?) possible. Had to give him a bath and stuck him in the kitchen with the baby gate up lest he have diarhhea elsewhere. And now he is, of course, whining, but this time I can understand it. Sorry puppy.
Have you crate trained the puppy? Achilles was pretty whiny when we brought him home, but after spending time in his crate and becoming familiar with the daily routine, he now only whines if he has to potty (but he barks...one bad habit to the next).
I was told some pups are just more vocal than others...hope it resolves for you!
