I searched for this question first & apologize if I missed it.
My puppy is almost 5 months old & I've been working with her on basic obedience plus a ton of socialization (as in various surfaces, loud noises etc).
She seems to have a strong prey drive but I am reluctant to play any tug of war etc with her because of teething. Maybe all puppies go through this but she seems to be having a very difficult time. Often it appears to hurt when she eats, I've frequently noticed blood on her toys, she rubs her face and her entire snout is often hot. I've spoken to the vet & she said puppies "work through their teething issues".
Is this normal teething and am I correct to hold up on any *bite* activities until her mouth is better.
I personally totally lay off my pups while they are teething.. it just takes ONE time, one pain association with the bite as a baby and you have a mountain of problems.
Dee, I agree that it is smart to lay off of the bite training or "tugging".
Use this time to reinforce your obiedience training. Using soft foods like small pieces of hotdogs, work on your basic "sit down stay" during this time. If he needs to bite something I found that a refrigarated puppy Kong gives tons of soothing to a teething puppy.
Good luck with your pup, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
I was told that freezing chicken necks makes the bones brittle. Is that true? Also, I have never given him chicken backs and/or wings. And now the pup is 5 months. Can I give him now espicially when he has no teeth to chew? If I chrush these bones, will it make it more susuptable to sprinter. All I am giving him (only for last few days) is beef patties, chicken hearts, beef steak and unfortunatley Wellness Puppy Food as I am not able to balance the RAW DIET.
