I have a 4 yr old pomeranian as well as my rottweiler and border collie. My pom has a collapsing trachea and my vet has her on vetalog (a steroid) and amynophylline for her breathing. We cycle the vetalog - 2 months on and a month off to reduce dependency on the drug. It seems that when we take her off the vetalog, she develops a UTI, which then has to be treated with antibiotics. Do the steroids cause this or is it just a coincidence? This is the second time she has gotten the UTI. Is there a better course of treatment for the breathing problems that don't involve the steroids?
Thank you.

Steroids reduce your ability to fight off an infection, and therefore increase the chance that you can acquire an infection like a UTI.
But they do not "cause" a UTI to occur.
A subtle but important difference in the world of Medicine.
And steroids have an important place in the treatment of some severe respiratory diseases. You need to discuss this further with your Vet if you're looking for other treatment options.
