I was curious if there was some way I could find out how many of these dogs have been trained in this sport. I bred them for a very short period of time but we moved and the new house isn't very practical for raising puppies so I had to quit
What got me interested in this subject was when I bought The New Complete Pembroke Welsh Corgi by Deborah S. Harper. In this book is a section on Corgi achievements, including Schutzhund. The first PWC to earn a Schutzhund title was Schulhaus Billy the Kid, CDX,TD, SchH II in 1975 (he had to forfeit 20 points because of the 64 inch scaling wall and he touched the 40 inch hurdle). It shows a picture of Billy jumping up to bite the sleeve, which looks very interesting.
I was somewhat interested in competing with a Corgi but I think it will be a Doberman instead (my other love). I have a female Corgi, and although she loves to bite the sleeve, I think she would crumble under the helper "fighting" back. It hasn't been tested so I don't really know how she'd react. But otherwise I think she'd have a lot of fun.
Well, at the judge's college for SchH judges some time ago, it was discussed that the SchH dog had to pose a "viable threat" in the eyes of the judge ( this was discussed regarding the SchH III Border Collie at the time, who was indeed a threat ).
And I've seen a local SchH judge protest a WH being awarded to a small breed dog ( and in truth, you could have kicked the small dog away from the protected object, so he was correct in his interpretation of the event ).
With all that, I don't feel that a dog smaller than say an Australian Cattle Dog should be eligible to get a SchH title.
I should have added that I own a Corgi now and love her, just so you don't think I'm being prejudice here.
I for one am not sure about the validity of the title.
The problem in some of the older books is that there is some problems with the accuracy of the titles. And you sometimes run into a bit of exaggeration....
For instance, there's a prolific dog writer that goes by the name of "Captain Haggerty" ( self-awarded title of captain, which is an insult to all veterans, but I digress ). This blow-hard constantly brags that he "judged the first SchH trial in the United States" ( he includes it in his bio ) yet if you look really carefully, you find out that it was actually a "mock" trial - at no time has Haggerty ever a real SchH judge ( of note, he also lists himself as an AKC judge but if you look on the AKC website he's a provisional judge....big difference ). Lord, what a phony, but the AKC people fawn on him and never call him on his deceptions.
So look at older claims with a bit of jaundice...
And people wonder where my suspicious nature comes from....*sigh*

Oh, I've heard of that guy! Isn't he the one who trained some film dogs and ended up in bit parts in some movies himself? I think he says that "Captain" is a stage name, if prodded about it, but yeah..........what a blowhard is right! Maybe all the stuff he says about his past and his accomplishments is true ---- for the sake of argument, let's say it's all true --- but he sure has no modesty or reticence whatsoever about his own glory! LOL!
Actually, he apparently wasn't too bad of an actor.
But training film dogs as a claim to fame is enough to establish a dog training career on. Add a whole lot of self-promotion and pad your resume and hope people don't check it for facts and bingo! Instant dog expert!
Hehe...well, it's easy to see that what he says is at best exaggerated, to be polite.
And now...back to Corgi's, the third best dog in the herding group!
He was on David Letterman in the first years on NBC. When the summer heat was high they had the "Captain" in his boxers get out of a leather recliner making all kinds of noise. I thought an Oscar was in order.....
