Has anyone had to have some baby teeth pulled? ( their puppies not their own) I know Ed says he never has and it is not needed. My puppy is having issues I think. His mouth smells like a rotting carcus or worse. None of his canines are coming out and are black. His gums are very swollen and hurt him. The bottom adult teeth are coming in on the inside of the baby teeth and are putting a hole in the roof of his mouth on one side. Showed them to the vet and he thinks they should be pulled mainly the bottoms because of the hole in the roof of the mouth . Should I or just let it go? He is now 5 1/2 months old
One dog had this happen and the vet would not pull the baby tooth - when the dent started appearing in the roof of the mouth I took him to a dog dentist who pulled the baby teeth and had to put a brace on the teeth to straighten them out and it was NOT cheap.
No cosmetics here the tooth was going to go through the roof. I left the first vet after that and was most angry!
When I saw this starting to happen with the next dog, I took out my trusty needle nose pliers and took care of it myself as soon as the baby tooth turned brown.
By 8 months my dog's adult teeth were in, but his baby incisors were still there. Smelled bad, as well. My dog has a tooth disease so at that point we had him knocked out to deal with his teeth, and had the baby ones pulled at that time. Also had his hips x rayed, only to find out he has severe hip dysplasia.
The baby teeth were dead and if they weren't pulled he could have gotten a horrible infection.
I had this problem very recently with my GSD bitch. She had a retained deciduous canine tooth on the upper R, the baby tooth was rock solid but black in colour, and causing the adult tooth to deviate forwards. I decided to remove it rather than risk having an angular deformity develop (I'm a vet, by the way
It wasn't an easy job as the tooth wasn't loose at all and the root is very long, even in deciduous canines. I did wonder at the time whether I was doing the right thing - however, so far so good, the affected adult tooth has 'caught up' with the other side now its free of its pressure from the baby tooth and looking good
