I have begun the process of shopping for a new vehicle and am curious as to how other people transport their dogs. I currently have an SUV with a barrier in the back section; this setup is not really practical for my next vehicle. I own a Coffee Shop and need to transport food items in my vehicle on occasion, this being the case I can't have the dogs inside the passenger compartment. I have been thinking about doing a pick-up with canvas topper that’s sides roll up and putting the dogs in crates in the bed. Is this a safe setup?
Jason, I'd go with a large cargo van and just build a removable partition between the dog area and the area that you'd be keeping food in. If you do it correctly, there'd probably be no trouble with a set up as I've described.

I thought about that, but the areas we go into for SAR training I really need a 4x4. And this will be my primary vehicle. Dating may be hard in a cargo van. Do you think the pickup setup would be unsafe?
Hmm, with the 4x4 requirement, I'd go for a pickup truck with the extended cab and a solid camper top. The sliding window between the cab and the camper area provides adequate cooling with the AC going.
I had a 2002 Toyota Tundra with the extended cab and a topper, it fit two 500 crates side by side with no problem and the back seat was great for equipment storage ( this was when I lived in the frozen Hell called Wisconsin and needed 4 wheel drive to leave my darned driveway! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> )
I'd highly recommend a set up as I've decribed above, it worked nicely for me.

What I was thinking was that with the sides rolled up and the truck in the shade I wouldn't have to take Alex's crate out of the truck. I'm glad you liked your Toyota, I'm actually looking at a Tacoma double cab.

And a deep cycle marine battery (set up to charge off the main battery but not drain it) to run fans in the back compartment when you are stopped.
I have been dreaming too - but we are hoping the 96 Explorer with 170k miles will make it until kid #2 graduates college in 3 years <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> and fuel costs don't look like they will be going down either.......
