My vet told me today that I should stop giving my dogs raw eggs completely. She says they "have a substance that binds Biotin" (a vitamin)
Does anyone know if theres truth to this?
Thanks a ton!
Vicki
From some quick research online, it looks like egg whites contain "avidin" which binds Biotin, a B vitamin, that can cause a Biotin Defficiency in humans (probably dogs too but it was an article for humans). This suggests that an egg daily might not be the best idea - however - I was always raised to only eat eggs 2 or 3 times a week at most when I was a child, and I only give my dog a raw egg 3 times a week, sometimes 4... even in Ed's articles he says he only gives his dogs a raw egg 4-5 times a week.
Cooking the egg whites supposedly takes the avidin out of the egg, but it also destroys alot of nutritional value that the egg has since you are effectively altering the egg.
Egg whites contain Avidin. Avidin is a metabolic antagonist for biotin. Avidin destroys or inactivates Biotin. Biotin is a vital nutrient for dogs. Cooking destroys the avidin.
By the way, Egg yolks contain Biotin. A conundrum, huh? Just make sure the dog's diet has more biotin than avidin in it. You can supplement biotin- in fact I think most dog vitamins contain it.

I love getting new info like this. So............yes, I do know that my dogs get a good amount of biotin. Are there other common sources of avidin I should be aware of? (I'm guessing it's poultry-related from the name.....?)
As I give raw egg to my pup, can I give RAW EGG everyday with only yolk not the egg white? Or I should continue to give 4-5 times a week but with more yolk than egg white?
BIOTIN RICH SUBSTANCES: legumes, whole grains, lentils, liver(not sure liver from all or specific animals), sardines
