I have a 7 1/2 yr old GSD dual purpose K-9, recently developed a problem with searching vehicles out on the highway. Does a poor job on the exterior and then maybe 1/2 way through will stop, sit and bark at me - good job in the interior. Training sessions - have NO problems with the exterior - just during the real thing. I have done many different things during training - even to the point of searching 5-10 clean vehicles and then finally a hide. What I have I done to shut the dog down during the real stop compared to training?

I know nothing about seaching. But I know dogs.
Start from the completed search and work back.
First if the dog works good in training and does not stop.Something is keying it to stop.Does the search always terminate at the same location on the vehicle? Are you wearing the same type of cloths? Do you have a partner at one but not the other? Find the common denominater and then think back and youl find the answer. Maybe you terminated a search at that point for another call..
Sounds like Sara’s problem is anxiety related it could be a number of things causing it. Shot me a Private Message and I will to look at here no cost to you...just interesting to me.
For now in training, I would do 1-3 fast and easy roadside training situations (bar lights on and all). Make the finds easy, easy. Easy.
This will help build confidence back in her searches.
The cause is just a guess until I see her work. It could be fear related because she is keyed up on a stop and does not know the threat the interior of the car. If this is the case detail the door areas only and try searching the interior first. After she settles in from the interior sweep you can search the exterior. If this is the case you should be able to go back to normal searches.
Again it is difficult to point out until I see her.

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland
