Guys,
Please feel free to close this thread. I just wanted to updated you guys as you had been very helpful and supportive.
As stated in my previous post, I went to the VET yesterday, he said few things-
1. NYC not such a big problem on HEARTWORM.
2.- The pup is under 6 months so no risks at all of having one.
3. Does not need a blood test as under 6 months so no chance for larvae to develope( if bitten)
4. He gave preventive medication- HEARTGArd WITHOUT DOING A BLOOD TEST. He said that medicine is far improved now...dog won't die if he gets a preventive medication if he has HEARTWORM but becasue he is < 6 monhts, preventive medication is good to start.
5. He will match the cost with internet prices!!! GREAT TIP FROM YOU GUYS.
HE DID NOT COORDINATE HIS WEIGHT WITH THE MEDICATION.
I HAVE YET TO GIVE MY PUP HIS FIRST DOSE.
I also have to apply FRONTLINE as the poor thing itches a lot.
Thanks,
Rashmi

Would anyone recommend Rashmi using Revolution ??(selamectin) (a topical parasiticide used in the treatment and prevention of heartworm disease, fleas, the American dog tick, ear mites and canine sarcoptic mange)
Wonder if it would save you any $$ with instead of having to pay for heartworm prevent and frontline???

QUOTE: HE DID NOT COORDINATE HIS WEIGHT WITH THE MEDICATION END
I feel sure that he did coordinate the weight with the med and that you just didn't realize it. Each multi-pack says right on the front what the weight range is.
Also, I didn't know your dog was so young.
Also, why have you not given the med? It's a chewy thing that the dog will probably like.
And finally, there's heartworm in all 50 states now, unless there's been an update since I last checked. Maybe there is less in big cities.......

I suffer from paranoia and the "better safe than sorry" syndrome... I'd give my dog heartworm meds regardless of where I lived, and I'd give him name brand stuff because I'd be sure it's the right dosage lol. I am a little skeptical as to the 30 day effectiveness of products like Advantage to kill fleas - putting drops of stuff on his back just doesn't seem like it'd kill fleas for 30 days... a day maybe... lol but I use it anyway.

I will give him one today. This was such good education for me.
Thanks a lot for you information. One big hurdle off my heart. I was worried sick. Yes, I am little too paranoid about him. He is my first dog and then GSD. But I know that by the time he is one year old, all this detailed analysis will pay off.
Thanks,- Rashmi

It sure will! Good for you, that you are putting in the time and effort to learn. Lucky dog you have!
The box has spaces on the back to write down the date of each dose so you'll remember when the next one is due.

I feel exactly the same, after watching a video of an autopsy on a dog who died from heartworm treatment. And now I don't even mind doing the name brand since the vet matches the internet prices. Again, I doubt that my vet is the only one.......and Rashmi asked his vet about it and was also successful. I recommend asking!

It should also come with lil heart shaped stickers that u can stick on the appropriate date on the back of the box... I give my dog his meds on the 1st of every month and have my calendar marked so I never forget and don't need to guess the date I last gave it to him

I think what he meant was that there is not a horrible epidemic of heartworms in NY so the chances of his dog being infected since he was without prevention was lower. When I was working as a vet tech in Ventura, CA we had not had a case of heartworms, or rabies, in the county for years so the risk of a dog being infected was low. Of course that's probably because alot of people had there dogs on preventative lessening the risk of spreading. The only case I ever saw was a dog who was from michigan and had a severe infestation.
