I keep both my dogs in kennels inside the house when i am gone (to keep them safe). One is a mastiff breed and the other a shepherd mix, and just their presense would be a deterrant for any intruder. But im wondering what good they will be as a deterrant as they are both kenneled? Should i rotate kennelling? ie one in, one out- and then switch the next day? They are no doubt both guardians, but wont be much good if they are in a crate. what are your thoughts? thanks in advance
The only way someone would know they were crated is if they could see inside the window. I would keep my drapes/blinds closed. Not sure which point of your house is most at risk but I would put one of the crates in that area.
Their crates are near the front door. Im just thinking basically if someone got in, they would have free reign as the dogs are both contained... thats why im wondering if it would be worth it to leave one out at a time (And also would let them walk around during the day, which they cant do in a crate). i dont want to stir up any agression that we've been working to curb between the two of them either by letting one out and having one in the kennel. it would be putting one of the dogs on a "higher level" so to speak because she would be free while the other was crated. I will say that theres no way id leave them both OUT of their kennels alone (in case they got into a fight)- which is why im wondering if it would be ok to have just one of them out. would that disturb the balance between the two?
Try it when you're home and give each a short equal turn in and out until they understand that each will get equal treatment. Then gradually increase the lenght of the turn until you can rotate them for a full day.
Now - if that was a really, really stupid thought, I'm sure somebody will correct it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
