I have a 5 month old Border Collie/Samoyed and he barks NON-STOP. About 3 weeks ago I got a 'no bark' collar and it hasn't been working too well. I figured that maybe his fur was too thick and he wasn't getting shocked, so I went to the groomer and got his neck shaved. When he barks I can hear the collar beep, meaning it sent out a shock, but he just keeps barking. I've tried to ignore it and he will go on for 4 hours sometimes. I'm hesitant to put him in the garage because my neighbors are very nosy and I can already hear the knocks on my door from the local pound! There is no doubt someone would say I'm "abusing" him by keeping him in there when he wont be quiet. I make sure he doesn't have to go outside, he isn't hungry and he has plenty of toys. He's just not getting the NO BARK concept. Most of the day he is a good dog, quiet and loveable and playful, but in the evening he is ALWAYS barking. The problem is that I rent the upstairs of a house, and the first 2 months I had him the basement suite was vacant. Now there is a young single mother living down there and she is getting very very annoyed at the constant noise. I'm at the end of my rope and I don't know what else to do. If anyone can help me and send their tips this way I would GREATLY appreciate it. I'm sure all my neighbors would as well.

I believe it is called "petsafe". I'm not completely sure, that is what the wording on the collar says. I know I kept the receipt and box and somewhere, I just can't seem to remember where! I bought it at Petcetera if that helps. The collar part is red and the box is black. I know it isn't the best one but my boyfriend was really frustrated one night and called every store in the city and it's the only one he could find. He wanted one right then and there!

Ok, there's the likely problem. Those collars do not deliver an adequate correction for the bark, hence the dog will just keep barking.
Most dogs with the a good collar like the Dogtra 500 or something similar ( properly fitted, which means tight ) are silent as a stone.

before buying a new bark collar you can try to stop it by throwing water at him. it often works great.

Thanks Will. So now I am wondering about the "no bark" collar Ed has in his "training tools" section. I noticed the Dogtra one is $249 and the NO BARK one is $110. Would another no bark collar be another waste of my money? Is that why you suggest the Dogtra?
And yes Jan, I have tried water. And LOTS of it! He loves the water. Even if I say "no" or "bad doggie" when I'm throwing it at him. I always say something like that so he doesn't think I am trying to play. But regardless, he thinks it's a game and just tries to catch all the water in his mouth!
Does anyone else have any home remedies I can try?
Thanks again.

Besides the bark collar, I would suggest a lot more exercise - the border collie in him especially needs tons of it. He's probably frustrated by all that energy with no release. A tired dog is less apt to bark. It may not work but it's a healthy alternative.

Were you speaking about the Dogtra 1100 NC for $249?
http://www.leerburg.com/1100.htm
If so...that's a command e collar, totally different than a bark collar.
The No Bark collar sold on Leerburg is the Tri-Tronics "Bark Limiter":
http://www.leerburg.com/815.htm
with the Dogtra version being the Dogtra YS500.
The Tri-Tronics version is a bit more sophisticated than the Dogtra version. Both delivery a sufficent correction to stop barking.
I have a Tri-Tronics bark collar that's 21 years old. It's the size of a brick, but still works.

I have the Dogtra 1100 that I use almost exclusively as a bark collar. Because of where I live, I don't want my dog to stop his serious "someone's out there" barking, but his irritating, "someone pay atention to me" yipping can really be a pain in the A$$. That's my only dislike of the bark only collar. It will zap the dog EVERY time it barks.

One more question.... How tight is too tight? The lady at the store said if I can hear him breathing hard then it is too tight, all he does is pant sometimes, does that count? I give him water and he still pants. If I don't do it really tight the collar will just flip around and it ends up on the back or side of his neck. I want to try and make this one work, the best I can, until I order and receive the one you suggested. Thanks for all of your help, by the way!
