I want to start to train my 7th month old GSD to track, Is this too young and what would be the easiest way to start training him. People have told me to use a piece of clothing that has my scent on it, have him smell it and then walk a track and mash down the grass as I walk and drop a small piece of hot dog every so many feet. Then have a toy at the end for reward. My plans are to protection train him because I'm a cop and I'm very interested in this kind of training.

My experience on this board is not many people respond to the tracking threads...But just in case, there is an actual sport tracking thread lower down on the index.
I have a 6 month old that I'm trying to teach tracking to as well. We've started the "Find It" game and then I'm going to do FST next.
I think the best thing to do is get one of the videos that they sell on this site (that's what I'm going to do).

I think the reason that most of the experienced trackers don't respond to quickly to the "how to" tracking questions is that it requires a fair amount of instruction to get started. It could take pages to really cover getting started with having to explain a scent pad and feeding on that area for the required time to build the foundation for footstep tracking.
That'd be *a lot* of typing to cover a complicated training program.

So how do you get started? Will, would you be willing to have a phone conversation with me or several people (for a small fee) to go over the basics of tracking training? I don't have a "club" to go to...but my dog loves to track, always has his nose to the ground, and it's fun for me to see him get so excited.

I need to read better, I started this reply and she had "no club" right in the body of her text, so my question was just dumb.
Apparently I need a class on reading comprehension.

Funny...but you didn't answer my question Mr. Will (your last name is WAY to long to spell).
Would you recommend any books or videos (this site has lots) that would help someone like me get started? I really want to do something with Remi since he comes from decent lines and is such a good dog. I'm just not sure that I want to do PPD or ScH with him. To be honest, I'm not sure if I could do it and not screw him up.

I agree that it's really fun when a house dog gets excited about scent games. A long time ago I had two training clients whose house dogs (pets.....not PPD or working dogs of any kind!) seemed to take to tracking. One was known to be part hound (his mother was known), but the other appeared to be a "regular mutt" of no discernable breed.
We found some publications from Dog Scouts of America and started their pets on the scent games described.
They have a web site now (of course), and the games are outlined there. They are still fun, too........http://www.dogscouts.com/scent.shtml
Again, of course I'm talking here about pets, not working dogs (or specially-trained dogs), so this may not be what anyone who can't find a club is looking for. It can be a fun activity for a family pet, though.

(I feel like I am hijacking this post but...)
I don't do anything half way. I checked out that site, and it's great for fun little games, but doesn't teach the dog or the handler the right way to track. If we're going to do it, I want to do it the right way. You never know when tracking someone might come in handy.

are some dogs born to track...meaning that some just have a natural ability to track and other have be taught....i do notice that in my two GSD's that one seems to track the scent of the baseball to the spot of were it landed first...she runs up to the ball after being thrown but doesnt pick it up...then she does a zig zag pattern across the line of were the ball rolled to the spot of were it first hit the ground...then b lines right back to the ball and picks it up and brings it back....was really weird to me at first cause i couldn't figure out what she was doing till we got a dusting of snow and i could see the trail of the ball and the spot that it hit....and then watched her and then it clicked in my brain what she was doing...and the male ...well..no comment...he just likes to run around with his stuff animal and play tug of war....dont think he could find a ball if it was in front of him..
