John,
Not all dogs are trainable to do scent detection work. First of all, does your dog have any prey drive - if you throw a toy, will the dog go get it? Second of all, will the dog hunt for the toy? If the dog doesn't find the toy quickly, does it have enough hunt drive to keep looking or will it get bored quickly.
If your dog has neither one of these - you are off to a very start.
I work private security in Richmond,Va in the section-8 housing. I am trying to get some information on getting certified as a dog handler. We have a high drug problem and having a K-9 would be a big asset. We have the same powers of arrest as a police offficer on the properties we work on. Any info would be a help. Thanks Jeff
